My rearend is noisy as can be. Im pretty sure the carrier bearing(s) are shot. I am wanting to upgrade to 31 spline axles and diff. What brand do you have guys have? I was looking at a set of Superior axles and an Eaton posi. Thanks.

I think this is a 50/50 decision. I've heard horror stories about both Eaton and Auburn. The reason I'd choose to go with an Eaton is because they are rebuildable, Auburns are not.

I'd use whatever brand of axles. I've heard of an "underpowered" car bending Mosers and I've heard of 400 horsepower cars launching at 6k on slicks and nitrous using stock axles and never having a problem. I think axle selection is hit-and-miss too.

I'm running an eaton and superior axles. I would NOT run strange axles. I bent mine one my first trip to the track, my dad bent his after about a year, and my buddy Mike also bent his. That is WAY too many to just be a fluke. I've heard the eaton switched to a crappy steel case and some have split it from the pin all the way around. I have actually seen one of these "cracked" cases in person. Now, I haven't had any issues, and I've heard a lot of bad things about the auburns... much more than the eatons. My dad has run the ford F250 31 spline unit HARD for 3 years and has had no issues, its rebuildable too. Its also the cheapest of the bunch.

Another choice maybe the Ford Traction Lock from an F-250. They have a 31 spline count and are made to survive the abuse of a 3/4 ton truck. Has anyone tried those heavy duty (thicker?) 'S' springs for T-Loks' as seen on ebay?

Paul, where did you get your eaton and axles from and did they come with the ABS rings?

I have also looked at the Moser axles. CFM sells them for around $290 with the ABS rings, collars, and studs.

The FRPP 31 spline diff for $260 from Summit does not sound like a bad deal. I just need something to get me through the next 8-12 months. I will start drag racing the car soon after that so I guess I will replace what breaks with something better. The FRPP diff should be pretty heavy duty though since it is used in the trucks.

My rearend just gets louder everytime I drive it and I dont feel comfortable driving 900 miles to FL in a couple weeks.

I got my eaton from Mark Williams motorsports as part of an internet special... it was only $290!!! I got my axles from summit for around $240. They came with studs and axle bearings too. I bought new exciter rings from ford for around $15/piece and they screwed them on when pressing them on, so I had the stockers removed and pressed on the superiors with no problems.

I think the main issue with the breakage of differentials is the fact that they are not made for all out drag racing. I know Auburn and Eaton always advertise their diffs for "modified street vehicles". A spool is really what should be used on drag cars.

If I ever come across some extra money I am going with Superior 31-splines and a Ford Trac-Lok. I have heard both good and bad about Eaton and Auburn so I figure I might as well get the Ford unit so in case it breaks, I can get another one cheaper.

That is my logic as well. I just need something to last me on the street for another year or so. After that I will most likely use the car for drag racing and very little street use, so I will just install a spool then.

I have an auburn pro with 31 spline superior axles. I havent had any issues with the auburn. I have a couple friends running the auburns in 10 and 11 second cars without issues. I think its a great diff. I dont think you can go wrong with either one though -eaton/aurbun.

I'm Also running an Auburn Diff, but with the Strange 31 spline axles. The shop I got them from speaks highly of them, and after a year I've had no trouble with them. My car's by no means a powerhouse though. No complaints about my choice so far, we'll see how the Axles hold up once the new combo goes in.
