3200 stall converter too much?

I really can't answer it.......I don't think you would be spraying off the line...:shrug: I know that the engine hp will alter the stall speed......

I would contact edgeracing.com and speak with Andre and see what he recommends.......for a more technical and correct answer......
 
I think people "overstall" the converters, IMO. Mine is at 3000 +/- a few with my BLower...works fine.

That's my take as well.

Here's a quote: "The best performance is obtained with a converter that has a stall speed slightly higher than the rpm of the engine when it starts to produce its strongest usable power. Too low of a stall speed will result in a bog, and launches will be slow, since the engine will not be in it's usable power range. Too high of a stall speed will result in the engine reaching its peak power range below the rpm. Since the converter can efficiently transfer power, this could result in excessive slippage."
 
Just got an answer from Andre at Edgeracing
He recommends a 3k torque converter.

are you racing with it mostly, or driving on the street mostly? racing=higher, street=not as high

for maximum acceleration, i have read that you want the stall about 700rpm before the peak torque

be warned ... the higher the stall, the more heat is created. heat is what kills automatic transmissions. so you had better get an external cooler if you go with a high stall converter.

mine is a 100% street car, and mine stalls at about 2750 or so when testing it with my foot on the brakes. i may end up going to a higher stall, but this converter was $180 with the AOD, so the price was right.

I have the opposite opinion. I think most people under stall their converters, because they’re scared by those who don’t know any better, (not referring to you BTW) who’ve never driven a car with anything but a stock converter that tell them it’s going to kill their drivability. They then end up disappointed with the results when they realize the 3,000RPM stall converter they just went with feels no different than the stock unit it replaced and has done next to nothing to drop their ET’s.

I’d never go with anything less than a 3,400-3,600 stall unit in any performance oriented vehicle I ever built again, regardless of the horsepower or weight. I made the mistake of under stalling my current set up at 3,000RPM and regret it to this day. Granted, my car tips the scales at nearly 4,000lbs, but it also make nearly 465lbs/ft of Positive Displacement blown torque.

If it came right down to it, I’d rather know I’d gone with a little too much converter, than too little.

I purchased a B&M external cooler. But 3000 rpm stall was what edgeracing recommended.

My mods : Edelbrock intake, BBK allum pulleys, 3:55 gears, 70mm tb, custom CAI;

Sitting in the garage: Transgo Shift kit (stage 2 with video), Shorty headers, Zex nitros kit, Off road h-pipe, transmission cooler.

Im gonna get a second opinion from B&M and maybe PI. It would be cool if I can get away with a 3000 or higher with my mods, but I din't even think I would be in the 2800 range.

For your setup, there are two great options we can offer. Both will put huge power to the ground.



If you were to go with our 3000 (3000-3200stall speed; 1.9 STR ), you would get a big performance gain over stock. The converter would keep great streetability and give you about 600 rpm higher stall speed. The converter will put you much closer to your powerband on launch and really help you get out of the hole hard a ton harder.



The other great direction you could go is with our 3400 (3400-3600stall speed, 2.1 STR ). This converter will feel slightly looser on the street, but give you a much more aggressive converter with a better match to your powerband. This converter will not only give you the great powerband match, but the higher STR will get you out of the hole absolutely violently.
