331, 347, or 408?

EDIT: Yes, its all good. It's whatever float your boat. It's all what fun and streetable definition means to you.

" Yeah, power=money.

/thread.

I know a 408 can make 400hp eaiser than say a 331, but what fun is that?"

For me? LOL aLOT o fun! I wanted a lot of power at a reasonable pocket AND low end.

Let me explain...my preference is best summed up with a car I can floor at 5-60 and get VERY close to the same times I can 0-60...that takes LOW END GRUNT. You can build any 302, 331 347 or whatever you want to revv high and get a rwhp dyno number. To me, fun is not giving up one for the other. The higher you go in c.i. the more low end you get. That's my preference I know and not someone elses. Personally, I would never go less than maybe 331 ..definitely 347 unless my car was blown. Again that is just me. That's not to say any car that doesn't have big c.i. n/a can't go really really fast! :)

Although...I am still trying to figure out why someone would buy that 4-cammer!! for $15k!! lol.

O' let me give yo uguys another example..Tha new wrx sti...I was reading you have to revv it to 6 GRAND EVERY launch to get the 0-60/QM times in the 5.0/13's range...but guess what.. you are putting along at a light and want to take off? You better DUMP that burning clutch again or you can expect 7.5-8.0 second 0-60's!!!!!! that's 15's-16.0 in the quarter..:notnice: Ok, Ok, :nonono: Now I am REALLY getting off topic I know...:OT:...well yes and NO. :flag:

I want to make sure you guys building those new engines GET WHAT YOU WANT.

I went to a LOT of trouble building my 306 because I knew I could get RWHP numbers the same as my Z28. I DID NOT know that it would not produce the same low end and was really disappointed...:nonono: Yes my fault, but I learned. But someone here will learn from my experience and nderstand it just aint the same power.

Ive done some research on 408s.

Price and such. I found it would cost me over a grand more, and still push the hp limits of the block.

IMO, Ima go all out on a 331 with a aftermarket block. Then boost it later.

No reason to worry bout 450hp, and have all this money tied in my motor. Whats the little extra( Yeah, its not cheap) but compared to the money already spent, might as well do it right.

Yep, yours is a great way to go man.:nice: KC is doing that too!! :)

Now..limits of the block...and $1000 more. Not sure where you got those numbers but the 351 block you can pick up relatively inexpensive although they are in fact getting more rare to find. The limits of that block are way over that though. It is more like 800HP + . Again, it is not the only OR best way to go though.

Well, you hafta buy certain things, just to make the motor go into the car.

Actually, you need bigger heads, injectors, hood, new headers, mid pipe.

In the end, the power is more, but also the cost is more.

Let me lay it out from the perspective of one who did up an
OEM block after-market combo :)

Out of that list you have above ................
The hood is the only thing I would not have to upgrade to go 347

My 165's are too small
My cam would not work
My intake would need ported or replaced with something larger
My headers would be too small

Well ... You get the idea

I just ain't gonna put 302-306 parts on a 347 :nono:

And besides all that .............
The talk here has been just focused on the motor

I now run the OEM ........
trans
clutch
rearend
with so suspension upgrades or even sub-frames

Having said all that ..........

Its one thing to do it with 300 to the wheels
and
Not push it hard all the time

You just C A N' T do that kind of thing :nono:
when
You go to the level of power that is being talked about in this thread

A mega high hp motor is great and we all want one :Word:

Its just silly if the rest of the car is not up to the task ;)

Thats the thing I ALWAYS think about with a 347

1) The price of the short block is just the first step in cash outlay
then
2) You got the price of the upgraded parts to bolt on it
then
3) You gotta make the rest of the car be able to handle the power

For me #1&2 is so costly :bang:
then
I'd have to deal with #3 :fuss:

I'll most likely not do a stroker
and
Do up one of the larger KB's so I can just use most of what I now got

Just said this stuff to show a long term plan is a necessity :Word:

Ok guys... Heres a question for you...

what would it take to get my vortech to work on a 9.5 deck motor????

What would prevent it from working?

Maybe you need diffrent mounting brackets?

As far as Air flow is concerned, any motor see's Forced air as just that, Forced air. You could hook a leaf blower up to any type of engine and make a little more power.

I agree with ford302redneck. zZsKyZz hasn't said much lol. What is yur budget and time frame? Do you have unlimited cash, a budget? some type of $$ plan/limit you want to go?

There is no right or wrong answer.
