331 Stroker....94-95 5.0?

Just curious to see what kinda power out puts you guys are seeing. I wanted to do a trick flow top end swap this summer and got to thinking. My car only has 55k on the odometer, why not just build it from the bottom up instead of swaping and swaping and swaping, and just do one swap and be done. Here is the plan

Coast High Performance forged 331 stroker with Trick Flow heads, intake and cam. Im thinking of upgrading to the high ported heads and possibly the stg 2 cam if it is emissions friendly...has a lift of .542/.563 w/ 1.6rr's and a durationg of 224*/232* @.50, emissions friendly or not?

So lets see what you guys think!
 
Don't know if that cam is emissions friendly. You also want to look at the cams LSA. That cam I believe is 110*. The stage1 cam is 112*. If you run either of these and the mods you listed you should also plan on a chip or tuner device. I would try to tune it first with timing and adjusting the fuel pressure. But, if that doesn't work then you are going to want to go with some sort of electronics.
 
What kind of compression ratio are you going to run? You stay around the 9's you can always add a blower later, you go up to 10-11 you can make much better power NA and still put nitrous on it later. (cause no matter what you think your gonna wanna push it harder and harder.) My 331 combo lasted less then 6 months before it was time for a blower. And fortunatly for me i went with a slightly less lower compression piston. mid 9's.

The biggest thing about building a new motor is really having a goal set at the end. Otherwise your going to put one part on and eventually swap and upgrade and it is going to cost you a hell of a lot more at the end then it could have if you would have truely researched and thought out your complete setup.

I like the idea of a complete motor swap. Thats what i did, car was down for only two days that way, and i had a spare motor in case i did something stupid. Plus you can take your time when assymbling it and not make any stupid mistakes.
 
I have been told and heard that a 347 stroker is not a freindly DD as a 331...just stating what I have been told. It will be more or less my Daily Driver during the nice months. I live in pa and the winters are ****. But yea, i wouldnt mind goin with a lower compression in the mid 9's and possibly throw a blower on later. I would love to be around 450-500rwhp

I do understand about the 347 story.

Peeps usued to say the Cobra pcm in our cars is a piece of **** but nowadays many, many peeps including myself dump the GT file in the original pcm and replace it for the Cobra.

Only a couple of years ago peeps said don't go steeper than 355's or you will have no first gear and turn too much rpm's at highway cruise. Nowadays you see many using 410's.

I only gave those two examples to point out that ...............................

Go do some searching over on Hardcore50.com forums. Some of the manufacturers post there. Won't blame you if you do a 331 but check out the CHP 347's, and see what all the other posters have to say about that displacement. Chp guys themselves post there as well. A chevy 454 and many other cars have much worse rod ratios but are in production vehicles. I know it's a big decision though and how it might feel safer getting the 331 instead. Good luck either way!

I would really considder a 347 over the 331. I had looked at thet route before I deciede on my 418. If built right and all of the clearances are good a 331 wont be better than a 347. Just remember when you decide you stuck with what you pick.
 
What block...thats the real question. the hp diff in the two is 10-15hp

My 331, H/C/I on 10psi=544rw/562rwtq on good gas 488rw/498rwtq on 91 octane super safe tune.
 
Actually a 347 would prolly be beter for a DD cuz on the street you dont spin it up too high. I went 331 bucause I spin up to 5000+ on my daily drives when I can and when I autocross or drag race I shift at about 6500 and thats not so good for a 347 cuz of the rod ratio. I think for reliability your best bet would be a 331 if you plan on spinning it with a big cam. Also, theres pretty much no way to pass emissions with that cam you picked. I'm running a 218/224 .544 lift (on both lobes) w/ 112 LSA and I barely passed. All my emmisions stuff is still in place too except the stock cats (I run high flows). Good luck with whatever you do.Oh and if you have the time...go with a custom grind.
 
I have a 331 in my 94 /aode and it only makes about 310 to the wheels on the dyno but when you put in the weight of the car and et/trap stats in any performance calculator is comes back at 380 to the wheels. I don't think my car and dynos go well together.

stock TFS track heat U/L intake
