Hey all, been a while since I've posted here.
I'm looking at building a torque monster 331 stroker. Nothing crazy but I want good torque out of it.
Was looking at a stock 5.0L block with a DSS 331 kit and Trick Flow Intake, heads, cam package (non track heat). This should give me some nice numbers I'd think but let's get some good input into what components I should use for this build.

Oh, as for why I need torque it's cause it's going into a Jeep

a 331 should work good, more stroke generally gives you more torque, bigger bore = more hp/higher revs. One way to help with tq is to put an intake on with long runners, like the GT40. Also go with a mild cam, with low duration (220/220), that will keep your torque at low rpms. Its really up to you what heads you use, just get something with nice big valves. You are going to have to measure piston to valve clearance anyway so you might as well get the heads with the biggest valves you can find, then match the pistons. Also be sure to have your lower intake ported and matched to the heads you chose, it will flow up to 25% better. Dont overdo it with the throttle body, a 75mm should do it. And unless you plan on putting some kind of supercharger or nitrous on it I wouldnt bother with anything above 24# injectors.

For whatever reason the TF street doesn't like the extra cubes (compared to all the other usual suspects ... can't go wrong with a GT-40 design

So the Trickflow doesn't like extra cubes eh? Interesting.

I'm still up in the air as to if I'm gonna do the 331 stroker, if I can get a 351W block for a song then I'll just go that route.

So a mildish cam, good flowing heads and intake and some LTs should be good for some nice down low torque.
I really want the range to be 1500-6500rpm. Should have awesome of idle torque and still be there in the upper rpms.

Article in 5.0 Must/Super Ford (July '05) states this anomaly with that intake ... the power curve was somewhat uneventful compared to all the other entry level intakes when put on a 347.

A mild build will not pull to 6500. Want the best of both worlds? ...

CHP347 10.5:1, AFR185 (58cc), Comp XE266HR or 274, RPMII Intake, 70TB, 75MAF, 30# injectors and all other supporting pieces ...

I was just looking on ebay and they have cheaper 351's than 302's. Not sure why but there cheaper. Wish I would have looked there when I was looking for a block for my self.

Remember guys, this is going in a Jeep to be off roaded and daily driven.

So I'm thinking a CHP or DSS 331 stroker kit, AFR 185s, RPMII intake, some sort of cam (suggestions? want down low torque), 70mm TB, 75mm MAF, 30# injectors and whatever else I'll need.
Close to what 89CopCoupe suggested. Any more input?

The 185 heads and a cam with > 215*dur and <112*lobe won't be great for clutch crawling (idling) over obstacles ... you'd be better off with a set of 165's and 24# injectors with the tried and true GT-40 intake on a 331.
The 165's and a smaller cam will have greater low speed port velocity which will greatly improve throttle response ... and still pull to 5700 ... the setup I initially stated would start coming on about 1500 and then begin pulling like a raped ape around 3K.

However, because the 347 creates a little more vacuum, you can run larger stuff easier and still have the desired 12 at the power brake booster. (The 331 isn't far off. The DSS 331 makes more intake vacuum than the CHP, yet the CHP 347 makes more than the DSS, due to rod length used.)

if your gonna put a ford motor in a jeep, don't screw around, just build a 351 and drop it in there...you would probably get just as much or more torque with a 351 considering that the deck of a 351 is a 1/2 inch taller than a 302...i got a 331 stroker in my car, and its a torque monster, but freaking expensive to build! you could mildly build a 351 for cheaper and probably get the same amount of power...let me know what you think...later!

I also personally would do a 351 for a jeep. Like the above stated.

Why not a SBC? Cause they are way over done, wanna do something uncommon. Plus I know Fords better then Chevys.

89CopCoupe, I'm gonna look a bit more into the orginal combo you posted.

It was just a suggestion, I know I could build a 350 for close to half as much as a 347. But like you said that wouldn't be different, and whats the fun in that?

AFR 185 heads and a Cobra/GT40 style intake with a mild cam for torque.

There we go,and throw in some higher compression and long tubes and we got torque .

(With a balanced assembly) it mostly depends upon valve train stability ... roller motors aren't high revvers like their counterparts ...

AFR's with the upgraded valve spring package will allow it to rev to 6500 cleanly (of course with a rev extender plugged into the stock computer).

Now could a stock T5 take this abuse or would I be better off getting an aftermarket beefed up T5?

Traction and good power will blow up a T5 or the beefier Z-spec T5 within short order ... you could buy a G-Force prepped T5 that will hold up good ... our the more common approach with high power, high traction vehicles is a Tremec with supporting components.

Professionally built and professionally driven T5s have taken a lot of HP and passes and lived.
