I finally got my 347 rebuilt with my supercharger and now I am having some extreme problems that i need some advice on! On the initial start up i waited for the thermostat to open and filled the radiator all the way up! Now, when i run the car, It will over heat and the thermo will never open. It will get very hot and start pouring water out of the radiator into the overflow jug, Once the overflow jug fills up it goes onto the ground. Normally it will get up to 220. The I can kill the car, Go out and relief all the pressure out of the radiator car with the release valve, It reliefs alot of pressure and almost pure air comes out! Then once it all is relieved, I can start the car up, And it will stay cool and drive great until I kill it and it cools down and it will do the same. I've replaced the radiator cap already. What do u guys think it is?

It could very well be a leaking head gasket pressurizing the system with combustion pressure. With the supercharger, if it went lean at any time it's pretty easy to detonate and blow one.

Could also be an air bubble in the system. It took like 4 times of messing with my 440 challenger to get it fill all the way up and get all the air out of the system.

What happened with mine is there was a bunch of air trapped at the back of the tstat and it isn't heating up like it should. What I did on mine was loosened the t stat housing a little to bleed the air off. It was much easier on my challenger as the housing is very accesible (sp?) much more so than on a stang. Just a thought.

keep refilling, and then before you rip stuff apart try replacing just thermostat, also make sure your gauge is correct.

The guage works great, Im thinking of replacing the thermostat and trying to refill and get all of the air bubbles out! Thats what Im leaning towards is a trapped air bubble that doesnt want to find its way out! Thanks for the help guys! Any more input?

I agree, don't tear it apart yet. Try the thermostat to rule that out. If that doesn't work out, I have a pretty common tester that you just hold it over the radiator and draw air out and it turns the fluid a color if it detects any combustion. Really handy tool, check around local radiator shops, etc. and see if they'll check it for you. Make sure you get it to about 3000 rpms while checking it because sometimes a gasket isn't leaking at idle. Don't tear it apart till you know for sure.

may also want to check your Hoses, i made the stupid mistake of leaving paper towel in the upper once. After a new radiator, theromstat, and a huge headach i finaly figured out my stupit mistake.

You did put the t'stat in with the spring towards the block right? I only ask as I've been futzin' around with these things for over 30 years and I still have to make a conscious effort not to put the t'stat in backwards. That and right-tighty, lefty-loosy. Hope it ends up being something simple like that.

Some stats come with a steam hole to bleed the air bubble off. I always drill an 1/8 hole in mine if it doesn't come with one. That will prevent steam pockets. You might want to do a pressure test on the cooling system to make sure you didn't pop a head gasket starting it with no water in the rad. And yes I did the backwards stat deal too once. Hope this helps. Mike

Its not dumping anything into the cylinders or the oil.ANd it technically didnt get that hot, steam tempurature was hot, but never over 220 or 230. Which isnt really that hot for a car. My daily driver hits 210-220 at a stoplight. But now, it throws all the fluid out of the radiator and onto the ground. Then once i fill the radiator back up, it will cool fine, It seems like the stat wont open until it throws the majorty of the antifrezze out and i refill it? what is wrong with this car!?!?!?

Id check the t-stat just to make sure its in correctly. Also when you fill it up (not running) unhook one of the coolant hoses to the egr and fill (through radiator) . This will help get most of the air out. If you dont have the hoses hooked up I guess that doesnt help. The hole in the tstat is always a good idea, just make sure its on the top when you install.
