2 months and 2 blocks later i finally got my 347 built. first block the machinist bored it .004 too far. got into an argument about it it would work or not took it to another machinist and he said he wouldn't run it, so i traded engines with my old mans pickup(let him have my 302 for his). the second block checked out fine so i started the process. notched the block, taped the oil galley holes for pipe plugs, filed the rings(what a PITA), assembled piston to the rods(spiral locks get easy with practice), cleaned, cleaned and cleaned some more then assembled.

parts list new

eagle balanced rotating assembly- sir rods, kb pistons, cast steel crank, balancer and flexplate.

750 dp holley

std. oil pump

main girdle

pushrods

gaskets bearing etc

Recycled from 302:

afr 165 heads

stealth intake

e-303 cam

duraspark dizzy

bbk shorties

tci streetfighter c4 and hughes 3000rpm stall

comp magnum roller tip diecast steel rockers

OOOOH man it has torque first time i stood on it i did a 1-2-3 gear pileup from a standstill. im a little disappointed with the rpm range though, it seems to peter off about 4500 rpm. it has more low end torque than i can utilize with street tires and i'm thinking about different cam-intake combos.

questions
#1 cam. i know the e303 i a good general purpose cam, but seems wheezy up high compared to the 302. what would be a good cam to extend the rpm about 1200rpm.

#2what would be a better fiting intake, the stealth and the afr heads dont line up worth a crap. vic jr maybee?

#3 valvetrain noise. the 289, 302 and 347 have the same exact sewing machine noise with these heads. the 302 had custom pushrods for dead center tip contact, but the rocker were very close to the retainers, so the 347 got slightly longer stock sized ones. i notice when i first put these heads on my 289 3/4 of the rocker studs were bent so i replaced them, maybee a bent valve too? or could it be the dampner springs. im lost on this i adjusted the rockers till the locknuts were no longer lock nuts.

I dunno brother. The e cam should be the cam that you are wanting. You could go to a b cam for higher rpm but you will lose out on the low end. Tuff call. Maybe something isnt matched right. I wish i could be more help, im sure others will chime in.

#1 Personally the E-303 cam is a nice upgrade to a regular 302 not a 347 stroker. Comp Cams has a couple of cams specifically for the stroker engines. I have no experience with them so I guess I cant really recommend them. But I would suggest phone coms cams giving them your combo and asking them which cam.

#2 Intake. Well the vic jr starts to pull at 3000 rpm. You will lose bottom end torque but you have lots of that now. It will want to pull well into 6000-7000 rpm range. Atleast aslong as you have the valve springs for that. It is a good intake.

#3 Which rockers do you have? You need to use a pushrod measuring tool to get the correct pushrod for your aplication. The pushrod size will vary cam to cam due to the way they have top offset the lobe to get more lift. when you get a new cam get (beg borrow or buy the tool) and measure then order for your current combo.

#4 I know you didn't ask a #4 question but if I may suggest you sell your current heads and upgrade to the 185's. Or at least get the 165's ported. They are not really enough head for your 347.

Here is a little article you maywant to read. I have a XE274 cam in my 351w and I love it. I would think that it would be the kinda cam you need aswell.

I'm with 86 - 302 parts are not your best option for bigger cubes.

165's are great for a 302 but you really need 185's (or even 205's if it's a more agressive race build.)

The Comp XE274HR or 282 are both solid choices and I have used both and made good power, the 282 will pull a little higher in the RPM range. I think a Vic jr on a stroker works great and don't worry about losing low end as you should have more torque than you street tires will ever be able to handle.
