my71 has been sitting for a while and is need of some carb attention. I was thinking of changing to a Holley 750. Should I use mechanical or vacuum secondaries? It has a 750 carter in place now. Or would you recommend something different?

personally i would rebuild the carb you have now, the carter carb is easy to tune. if you are set on getting a holley though, i would get a vacuum secondary carb for the street.

the biggest reason I am considering changing is due to the age and wear on the carter. It has seen a lot of rebuilds over the years.

Buy Edelbrock

Edelbrock has the rights to the Carter AFB so buying a new one of those would be best. I have two of them and love them greatly.

About the only tough thing to recondition on a carb is if the throttle shaft has worn the shaft bore too big. In this case, professional carb rebuilders can sleeve these easily.

If you have to ask, get the vacuum secondary.

Or just get a edelbrock and call it good, you'll never notice the horsepower loss vs a holley, because you don't have a holley on it now anyhow...

true enough. between a friend of mine and i we have 7 edelbrock 1406's, and all but one runs great, and that one is more than 10 years old now and ready for a rebuild.

I put a 650 elderbrock on my 73C, was much easier to tune than the Holley... ran better at idle with the cam I had. So other things maybe to consider

Elderbrock ? I see now the reason you had problems with a Holley. That, and I'll bet you're still adjusting your points.
