A freind of mine recently who works for the city recently parted out a '91 Crown Vic police car. He only paid $100 for the whole car and he sold enough parts to get his money back, so he offered me the motor out of it for free. While I don't have any current need for it, I hate to see it thrown away, so I told him I'd take it. Here's my question: it's a 351W, but how similar is it to older 351w's? Are the blocks the same? Same heads? Is it a roller cam motor? Thanks.

Aside from the throttle body injection, it's about the same as all other 351Ws of the 80s & early 90s. It has a rear sump oil pan that's popular for use in a Fox 351 swap, and the oil cooler is a good piece. It's not a roller cam motor.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if it was the same or some bizarre non-desireable dog that wasn't worth going to pick up. Can't beat the price, though...

Just the oil pan is worth its weight.

I'm not too familiar with 351W's, is the pan unique to them? I thought they shared their sheetmetal parts like the valve covers and pans with the 289/302 motors. See? You really CAN learn something new every day on Stangnet!

The LTD 351W pan is a double hump 5.0-style pan for a 351W. Verrry desirable for 351W fox swaps.

I don't thing 302 and 351 pans are the same. I think the curved part at each end is larger on a 351. But I'm not 100% sure of that.
Also on the 351 double hump I think the dipstick goes in the pan and the 302's go in the block. But again not 100% sure.

The 351W rear main seal is larger than on the 302 pan. The 351Ws with dual sump pans had the dipstick in the pan. The 302 dual sump pans were available both ways (dipstick in block or in pan).

That makes sense, my '88 GT 5.0 has a pan-mounted dipstick.

The rear main cap on the Windsor is much bigger, that was the difference. They both share the same timing covers. As for the pan mount dipstick in the dual sump 5.0 pans, those are not common and are desireable for early block engines into V8 Ranger swaps.
