351Wcoupe: like my signature?

speaking of torque the good ole, 215hp 3.8 SC cougar is a pretty torquey engine. A guy that owns a 5spd supercoupe that I murdered with the lightning said his car even out-torqued my truck. So just in good faith I ran him in the cougar WHICH IS AN AUTO and I pulled 2 cars on him from the start and held there to 135 when he finally gave up.

Supercharged 3.8's only had 215hp? Sorry, I haven't done any of my research yet. But considering a turbocharged 2.3 can put out up to 200 I figured that a supercharged 3.8 would be up and in the 240-250hp range.

I think they have somewhere close to 300ft lbs of torque though. I ran a mustang that had the same hp was also an auto and geared 4.30. I pulled him off the line and everything, once we got moving pretty good he ran out of gear and the cougar was finally starting to come to life.

Umm ...well I know I had my turbo charge butt handed to me by a S/C 3.8 fully loaded Buick granny car once It was close at first but then All he did was swap pulleys for more compression and was able to run a 14.9. He said stock it did like 240hp ( or was that with the other pulley ) so I would guess the Ford version would be close to the the Buicks Hp. Now that is just my guess.

One guy told me the later 94-up supercoupe was 235hp. The cougar is definately 215hp w/ the same engine.

1989 Cougar - Supercharged 3.8 - 210hp @ 2400 rpm & 315 lb-ft torque @ 2600 rpm
1990 Cougar - Same specs as 1989
1991 Cougar - Apparently didn't come with SC 3.8's just n/a 3.8's and 5.0's
n/a 3.8 - 140hp @ 3800 rpm & 215 lb-ft torque @ 2400 rpm
n/a 5.0 - 200hp @ 4000 rpm & 271 lb-ft torque @ 3000 rpm
1992 Cougar - Same specs as 1991
1993 Cougar - Same specs as 1991 & 1992
1994 Cougar - Same 3.8 specs
n/a 4.6 - 205hp @ 4500 rpm & 265 lb-ft torque at 3200 rpm
1995 Cougar - Same specs as 1994
1996 Cougar - n/a 3.8 - 145hp @ 4000 rpm & 215 lb-ft torque at 2750 rpm
n/a 4.6 - 205hp @ 4250 rpm & 280 lb-ft torque at 3000 rpm

what really scary is what the 4.6 puts outVs the 3.8 SC. but still Amanda's mom has a 96 T-bird 4.6 Auto and it definately feels like it will walk the cougar......lol i'm sure we'll find out one day.

Again....When I found out the peak hp rpm I started letting the car shift much sooner and it was faster. Just like the N/A 2.3.

and i don't think we or i mean you will be racing anything of mine because thats all i have to drive in the 6 months that i have to wait til i can drive... how dare you say that my mom's car will walk mine

Hmmmmm, I wonder how difficult it would be to swap a SC 3.8 into a fox body Mustang. Even though it only makes about another 10 horsepower than the turbocharged 2.3 (which I still cant really make sense of) I'll bet it would be much easier to make more horsepower from other modifications, ie. exhaust, CAI, underdrive pulleys, chips etc. etc. just considering it has more displacement. Does anybody here know if it would be possible to take a Supercharged 3.8L Ford engine, and take a turbo from another source, ie. 2.3 Mustang and turbocharge the 3.8 as well as have it supercharged? Could be an idea.

Now, dont get me wrong, I never said it was a smart idea, just an idea.

I've seen that discussed in magazines before. Seems like it's possible with adequate wastegates(or whatever lets off the excess pressure). But I can't recall anyone actually building a running car with that setup. There was the J-2000(I think that was what it was called) the first "pro-street" actually just a non-running mockup. It was a Pontiac(?)hatchback with a twin turboed-twin supercharged(they sat on a "V" shaped manifold)into a Chevy(?)engine. I can't remember if it was a small or big block. Never ran it though, never started the engine, just a big shiny(all that chrome!) paperweight.

OK yeah I discussed this with someone on TF recently. Yes I have one more spare car (90 hatch 2.3 auto) and a spare 89 SC engine and trans.
here's what I'm thinking not sure how it will work just yet but I'm checking back through my books as I'm posting this. I'm thinking about using an 86 3.8 V6 Kmember (which sits a V8 horribly to one side and is in my way), use/mod the stock mounts for an 86 V6. The trans will work work just the same. I also have a spare harness and several computers so I may start disecting one and make a self powered harness. Put it on my list of projects..... somewhere towards the end.

Sounds like fun, let us know how it works out. I just finished watching gone in 60 seconds, so Im pretty motivated to start a v8 Mustang project. Maybe putting on twin-turbos and a supercharger on a 351 in a 71 Mach I will be something that I will look at. I'm not saying that it's going to be easy, but it sounds like it is possible, so maye one day I'll give it a shot. However, perhaps I should pace myself, after all, my 88 2.3 is still a work in progress today.
