I think that up until 1998 they all used a speedo gear in the transmission. You will need to get the correspnding gear for you specific ratio. Any local Ford dealer should be able to get one for you, but they will charge you more for them.

You will need either a SpeedCal or a handheld tuner such as the XCal 2 or Diablosport Predator.

The ONLY real way to go about correcting your speedo in your car is with a speedcal. Since you have a pre99 car your only options are the seedcal or a speedo gear, which can eventually break or chip teeth and become useless. Get a Dallas Mustangs Speedcal, install it, and you're good to go.

Speedcal is kinda expensive and you can only get it for one gear ratio. I guess using a tuner is the best idea, although that can get real expensive. I have an 03 GT with 3.73s and the speedo is off, but more importantly the odometer is off too. It sucks racking up miles a lot faster than you should be.

You have no idea what you're talking about.

A Speedcal is expensive compared to the gear but it covers ALL gear ratios. Going from 1.27-4.40, 3.08-4.10, 1.0-14.0, (some exaggeration there but trying to prove the point), It will convert your ratio. A tranny gear will only adjust from ONE gearset to another, no modifying in case you swap out your 373's for 3.90's or 4.10's. A speedcal CAN do that with no hassle at all.

Also he can't use a tuner since his car is pre-99, so that wouldn't do him a bit of good.

His only options are a speedcal or a tranny gear change, and the speedcal is more effective/accurate/cost effective in the long run.

If memory serves, you'll want the 20-tooth black speedometer gear.

X2. There are dip switches that can be set to change the speedo for your gear and/or if you changed your tire and rim size. Works great and better than racking up miles on the odo. Cost is about $80.00-$90.00 shipped.

Mine was like $75, and I can adjust for any gear ratio out there. It's a Dallas Mustang SpeedCal. Get it, don't think twice.
