Does anyone run a one-wire alternator? Time to upgrade since my alt is crapping out.

I've found some 3G's on Ebay for $90......160amp. Seems easy enough to get the 1-wire and just run the power cable to the solenoid.

Any good/bad luck with these? Did you just tape off and hide the original harnesses?

My other option is to just buy a brand new 3G and do the wire splicing. But a new one at a parts store is twice as much. Don't really want a junkyard one, rather know its going to last a while.

Thanks!

Not sure if it's still an issue nowadays, but I've heard problems with one wire alternators needing to get some pretty good RPM before they excite enough to put out any voltage.

Hmmmm....that's what I was cautious of.

Although I did just call my local pick and pull junk yard.

They said they have plenty of cars on the lots with 3G's......$25 for the alternator.

Seems like a pretty dang good option to me!

Might just go Monday and take a look see.....bring a couple wrenches and some wire cutters.

You shouldn't need the wire cutters unless you want to grab the pigtail off the harness. Otherwise, for $25 you should grab a couple. Having a spare is nice if you have one crap out.

i have the one wire setup and am glad that i did it. I took a 130 amp to the local auto electric place and had a self exciteing regulator put in it then bought a kit from 50resto (i think, cant really remember) that had like a 4ga wire with a big ass inline fuse. tucked the stock harness under the air box and ran the new wire in front of the rad. and behind the battery tucking the fuse in behind the front fender. easy peasy and it works super. i dont have any problems with a charge at rpm's as low as 750 with a underdrive pulley.
