3G install problem?????

hey guys i bought a alternator from a 96 mustang , now i've been following the instructions from mustangcentral.net http://www.mustangcentral.net/tech/alternator.html it says cut the union of the 2 10 Guage black and orange wire, and tape it off, my question is> do u have to connect it to something or just leave it capped off, thanx

Tape or heatshrink them over. Under no circumstances connect the two 10 gauge black/white wires to the 3G alternator. If the fuse blows in the 4 gauge wire, the two 10 gauge wires will be overloaded to the point of catching fire and burning up the wiring harness.

Almost every one I've read on this swap say's to cut the two orang/blk wires a inch back from the connector put a butt connection on them and connect it to the Alt. THIS IS WRONG.

Yeah, but the orange and black wires fuselinked, at least on my car. Those fuse links will blow in half a second if you try to dump that much power through them. So, i connected them all. The big wire carries the load and little one just helps if needed. You can do without the small wires; but why, they are there, so use them. Unless the wire is rotten to begin with.

Well, those small wires are what starts fires in the engine bays of cars with the stock alternator. Ultimately its up to you to decide what info you want to use.

The fuseable link in the original harness connects to the two 10gauge black/white wires. The other end of the fuseable link connects to the battery post of the starter solenoid.

Those small wires aren't what actually start the fires it is the connector's poor design. The spade connectors do not provide a good firm connection. A loose connection creates resistance. Resistance makes heat. Heat makes fire. It is the connector that is the problem, which is why when you buy a quality replacement 2g it comes with a new connector for you to crimp on as well. It is also why everyone uses a lug on new alternators. Ford even has a TSB on it. They admit that it sux.

However, blk92stangg is right you don't have to use them. The ampacity of 4awg wire is high enough for a standard 3g. I just overbuild typically. That way the heavy wire never gets close to its ampacity; and if there is a spike, the 10awg wire is there to help take the overload. Nevertheless, using them both will not start a fire unless you defeat the fuseable links.
