3rd Gear & Chips

Ive been driving this car for 10 days now and simply love it! However, I find 3rd gear to be the slowest one for acceleration..

I got spanked by a WRX on the weekend, both runs he started accelerating before me so I thought that was abit cheesy, but both times I started in 3rd and well, is there anything I can do to correct this!?

Ive got a SuperChip left over from a previous Ford (Escort Zx2) and it was my understanding that the chip will work on any Ford but obviously it has to be programmed for this car. Looking at the superchips.com website, I cant seem to find a chip for the Stang that looks like the one I have.

Any help would be appreciated,

Why would you start a race in 3rd gear? Did you start at 60+?

I think he means as he was going through gears, like started in first, second, then hit 3rd and wasn't accellerating as fast.

I was racing my friends 93 lx, lots of mods. I smoked him on the launch thanks to my dr's and had him up until 3rd. Then he came back out of no where and pulled on me.

He said in the post that he started in 3rd. Dont know what speed they were at. If I am going 50 or less, I will downshift into 2nd.

Thanks for the reply's guys,

I was minding my own business in the middle lane and saw him come up on me.. I was doing about 120 KM's and he showed me 3 fingers and then started taking off, i had gone down to 3rd when I saw he was going to race, but he was already accelerating.. I caught up to him and this time I was ready but he took off on 2 fingers..

Okay so I guess Gears right? Forgive me cuz Im new, what kind of gears should I be looking for?

And it seems like you guys dont think chips are worth while, thing is I already have one.. So Im a better off having it programmed? Or should I sell it ?

Oh and I guess when I'm already moving, I should start my racing in 2nd ?

Drop down to 45mph and race from second. You should get 3.73 or 4.10 gears...those will drastically help you out! You have no power in 3rd gear at about 60mph (roughly 120kph)

Whats the diffrence between the 3.73 and the 4.10 gears ? The lower the faster the acceleration while sacraficing top speed?

Does anyone here use CHIPS ??

Have you guys heard of the "POTS MOD" ?? (Maybee a diffrent term on here) but its basicaly using potentiometers to trick the emmisions system into thinking that the engine is cold thus advancing timming and dumping more fuel..only for short bursts, worked great in my previous car.. Dyno's showed a 10 HP increase on a 4 cyl in the top end.

It works on all Fords, I just got this car so I dont want to start taking the console appart and figuring out what wire is ECT and IAT just yet, but I found this very mod in a book called something to the effect of Tunning Fords with Emmisions.

I've never heard of anyone doing anything like that.

You have the right idea on gears. the lower (high number) you go you sacrifice top speed but gain down low. Where are you from?...we dont used KPH here in the states.

Oh and I guess seing as how none of you (so far) have heard about the pots mod, when I get around to doing it, I'll do a write up and post them along with a dyno. This is by far the cheapest mod I have ever done and bang for $ you cant go wrong. We had a guy in this other forum I would visit that not only did this to his Zx2 but to his Windstar as well (hehe yeah I know) and it realy made both his car and van come to life.

Chips are ok. Won't give you too much of a performance gain for the money. I wold only get a chip if I was doing heavy mods. I am interested in the mod you are talking about. please too post up the details if you do this to your Mustang.

Okay but for the 50$ it takes to program my existing chip, am I better off selling it? What kind of gains are we talking about ?

I will post the mod when I get around to doing to my Stang.. Id say within the next month.. Definitly something everyone should do especialy considering all it takes is basic circuit knowledge and not much time to do the install.

If you have a superchip keep it. It gives you a lot of options such as fixing the speedometer when you do gears, changing timing, and changing your air/fuel ratio.

If you are going to use the chip you def. dont want to do the pots mod, they both advance your timing, but the chip is supposed to even out the fuel curve, the transistor mod will make your car lean out and it could run poorly.

Good advice, however, I had done both the chip and the pots mod to my other car and it still pulled harder and never had any issues. Im begining to get the impression that alot of people here under estimate the potential of the computer. Doesent Ford have any racing computers for these engines ?

Anyway, I'm just going to have the chip reprogrammed for this car, acording to a tech I spoke to from Superchips, a stock engine will gain approx 18hp & 26ft/lbs of torque.. Not bad for the cost of a reprogram.

There was a pots mod thread here about 2 years ago somewhere in the 4.6 area. No way in hell I'm going to look for it though, I couldn't get a good result from it.
