4.10 gears want!! And questions!

I want to put some 4.10 gears on my 02 gt. Are they easy to put on with instructions(No experience here). Would i need a tune afterwards or a chip? And where can i find gears?

Any help would be appreciated.

u could prob. do it yourself; with a guide off the net; but if u aren't familar with a job like that, i wouldn't even consider it. unlike alot of bolt-ons, if u don't get everything just right (backlash, etc.) u wil have major probs. with gear whine or worse. install shouldn't cost any more than 150-250 bucks at most.

u will need a speedcal or a chip to correct speedo. depending on your setup.

I think that if you have to ask if gears are easy to install, then you shouldn't try it. Too easy to screw something up. It is going to easy and better and cheaper in the long run if you pay to have someone do it. I took mine to a stang shop here and drove away $400 lighter, but 4.10 heavy in the rear and about 20lbs heavier in the right foot now. If you have a 5spd then you can get a speedcal from dallasmustang or somewhere else, it's an easy install. If you have an auto then you could probably get a reflash or something, but your speedo will still be a little off.

If you have an auto, you will have to get a chip, no speedcal for you lol. Chip is the only thing to make gears work on an auto. For a 5 speed you can do a chip or a speedcal. I went with a chip. It took the normal sotp gain you would feel from gears and added an extra boot up my butt if felt like when I stomped down on it

.... and I went with just 3.73's lol.
As for the install, I agree with the above, if you have to ask if you can install it, let someone else do it that knows how. Gears are not something you want to play around on a car with. To much can go wrong quickly if you dont know what you are doing.

I bought my 4.10s for $130, had them installed by my mechanic buddy for $200 here in north Jersey, and it cost $83 in gear oil and other install parts. If you do it yourself, and don't shim the gears right, it will whine. I would strongly recommend having someone else do this for you, unless you are ASE cert or something.

i just bought 3.73s, i like em, but which i went 4.10s, but im getting a SC over the summer anyways so i hope it makes me happier that i got the 3.73s

Woah Pony, don't be getting crazy!! Do not do it yourself, it would be suicide. Like everyone else said, just a little off and you'll have gear whine. Mine were installed by Ford and they are perfect, motive gears at that.

You could buy an entire rear-end with 4.10's installed. That would be and easier swap than doing gears yourself. On a 1-10 scale changing gears would be an 8.

gears are not as hard as they are annoying. if you do not have patience do not attempt it. I mean there is nothing "hard" about it. it just has to be right. if that means seting up up 4 times before it is right that is what you will have to do. if you thing you have it right and there is still gear whine guess what you do it again. If you do it right there will be no whine. So if you are a patient maticulous person will not be a problem. I mean there is a procedure to it just like ajusting valves, etc. if you do it right you will be fine. there are good instructions online. my .02 is do it. just take you time and learn. If eveone takes the attidude that you can't do it you will never learn how. It is not black magic there is an exact procedure to seting up a rearend.

hey, this is sorta dumb, but how exactly do u go about installing the chips when u order them, havent done any work with this kind of thing. Is there a web site or somethin with install instructions...Thanks
