That plastic gear will not change the speedo at all. I've tried it on my 98 GT. You're speedo will most likely still be off. You'll need a tuner or a $90 Speed Calibrator (speedcal).

And the install of 2-3 hours is about right. Hope you're not paying to much for labor. $200-250 is about the going rate.

We can't use the tuner to fix the speedo on our cars(96-98).
I used the DM speed-cal and my speedo is dead on. Just leave the factory speedo gear in and get the speed-cal.

BTW your gonna love the 4.10's........

Hey outlaw97, do you do a lot of high way driving? If so how are your gears on the high way? Im looking at 4.10s but I do long trips on the high way. I don't want to get 3.73s if 4.10s are too extreme for me

Casually mention the friction modifier. Ask "What brand are you putting inside?"

I drive the free-way everyday to work.
My car is an auto, but you'll be close to the same. 70 @ 2600 and 80 @ 3000
There is not really to much of a difference from the 3.73's to the 4.10's RPM wise and 4.10's just pull well even up high.
Im planning on staying N/A so 4.10's are the best choice...

when i got my 4.10s done, it took only an hour and fifteen minutes, no joke. a lot of shops charge for the extra hour or two for jobs when it doesnt take long.

my uncle that worked for ford as a mechanic told me a funny story. when customers would come in cuz the check engine light. they charged them for 2 hours of service when the only problem was the gas cap wasnt on the car making the check engine light come on.

I hope they measured everything. I have installed a lot of gears and I doubt the pinion depth and backlash was measured.

At least 4.30 for a Cobra. DO IT!

And yes, add the friction modifier.

oh yeah they were. he used that tool with the gauge. very good installer that comes highly recommended here in the bay area. did mine for 180 considering i was going to a well known mustang shop (apexmotorsports) and they were going to charge me 625 plus tax for the gears, install, and 4 hours labor.

i paid 150 for the frpp gears, and just the 180 for the labor

It won't mess with highway driving too much, I'm around 2300 @ 70 and 2500 @ 75. Think of it this way... It may keep you from going 80+ on the freeway, but then you won't get a speeding ticket.
