So I have done NOTHING with my car since moving into the house. Last year I tossed my 31 spline carrier and axles in the night before a race and didn't have time to check the tolerances as we always do.

Shortly after a few races I noticed the rear end was getting noisier. It was clunking as you drove. I knew the carrier shims were incorrect and decided before the next race this year to have it reshimed.

Brought the car to a friend, and we popped the cover off. Low and behold, gear teeth came out. Went from a half hour shim job, to a few hour gear swap. The guy who was helping has a shop at his house that rivals any garage. He had many sets of any gear ratio I wanted. I opted to toss in some 4.10s, just for fun.

So anyone have any ideas what I might run with these? Better, worse, the same?

I will borrow a set of Hooiser slicks on Draglites, and skinny front runners for my race in two days.

well i dont think anyone can really comment on how your car will run with 4.10's but i can ask the usual question, stock cam isnt gonna like to flow very long with shorter gears like that and may actually hurt your times, toss in a mild cam however and you may pick up a good amount of time

I agree there, and from discussions I had it seems the 107-108 mph I have been seeing at the track probably means the 3.73s were the right gear.

I tend to think the car might not pick up at all, and might actually go a little slower, but Friday will tell.

I shift the car at 5500, and although ot 100% sure, think I'm trapping right in that RPM range.

Help or hurt doesn't matter to me.

I also will not have a set of skinnies for this race, so 18s out front it is.

how tall are the slicks you are going to use? I think you would see a small gain on a 26" tire, it will keep the revs down but pick up mph no? the biggest problem you will have is keeping the revs in a usable range for your motor combo.

I have 4.10s in my car and previously had 373s in my 89 with the same motor. The 88 feels like it pulls alot harder. But every car is different!

You may begin to "nose over" a little once you get up to 107-108, just because you'll be pushing past your power band in 4th. Doesn't look like you'll run out of gear though, assuming you're on 26" tires. The extra acceleration you have early in the 1/4 may make up for running past the power band in 4th.

Check this site out- I found it on the google machine. Looks like you'll be at 5725 RPM if you trap at 108 on 26" tires with the 4.10s.

Don't you mean 28"? Stock tire size is 26".

26x9 Hoosier slicks.

I'm not expecting much, just couldn't see sticking with the same parts while we were already in the rear end. I rather upgrade (if you can call it that) than merely fix the problem.

My wild guess is that you gain a little in ET and lose a little in trap speed.

Track rental on Friday.

My car might be there on Saturday the 12, but if it is I won't be racing it, someone else will.

Don't run up to the guy and start talking to him, lol!

Fathers friend might be coming to the track, and the interest to race is there...

Trust me, I can think of anyone who would be harder on my equipment than me.
