The 5.0's are basically bullet proof. I know of guys that have 200,000 plus miles on supercharged motors and have never been inside them. Are the cobra motors that strong? What is the average life span and what does a rebuild cost?

police cruisers/taxi cabs that are crown vics take a huge beating. some are cruisers til 150k and then a taxi for another 150k.

if taken care of the mods will last a long time, just like its push-rod cousin.

deftsound

Please ask me how much my supercharger cost

I feel the 4.6s are a better engine when i comes to longevity. If you pick up a manual the internal clearances are alot tighter and there is way less slop allowed compaired to a 5.0. dont get me wrong 5.0s are good engines and do last a long time but i think the build quality is better on the 4.6s.

the 4.6 is a better built motor.

a guy at the corral had well over 300k on his blown 4.6. Stock motor, stock bottom end, untouched.

I was kinda hoping that you guys would tell me the 5.0 was stronger. Damn it. I am getting closer to selling the 90 limited and getting a 98 cobra. Just breaks my heart to give up the old 5.0... But the cobra will have better collector value in the long run, i think???

You posted this question over in the 4.6L section, what were you expecting for a response.

Truth be told, in N/A trim, it near impossible to beat the mod motors for longevity. That's not to say the old 5.0L OHV's don't knock off the miles either. I know of numerous versions of both engines that have 300-400km on them an are still ticking. 4.6L's will tend to stay quieter and use less oil over time as the miles pile up though. Not to mention mod motor gaskets almost never leak. They use rubber/silicone impregnated gaskets throughout so the won't dry out and leave puddles of fluids all over your driveway over the years like an OHV will.

If you're talking longevity with a power adder, I'll give the nod to the 5.0L OHV over the 4.6L. Sure, if tuned properly the 4.6L can last forever, but get a little too excessive with the timing, or run a batch of bad gas through a tune that's already on the edge and you're more likely to break a piston or bend a rod on a mod motor than you ever are with an OHV. And that includes the '93 and later 5.0L's that replaced their forged pistons with hypereutectic ones.

i agree with all posted th 4.6 and 5.0s are both great motor alot of long life is the care and maintence.. the 4.6 block is stronger than the 5.0s.. i use to work at a shop part time and we did all the service on the county sheriff crown vics a bunch of them had 150,xxx+ miles and the cars never shut off they are ran 24hrs... 365 days a year the only thing i believe you have mor trouble in the 4.6 is timing chains.. guides and tensioners every now and then some last forever and some have to be replaced in 100,000 again its all in maintince.. i have a 99 gt 134,xxx and gets hit with the giggle sauce on a regular bases

Just pulled the heads off my 96 for the PI swap and the cylinders look brand new and it has beautiful crosshatch. But they are both great engines. BTW my engine has over 185k miles on the clock.

Remember that one thread when someone was debating between a 5.0 and a 4.6 Stang and everyone here told him to get a 5.0 and everyone in 5.0Talk said to get a 4.6
