4.6 sohc

I know the DOHC engine requires the MII conversion, but I am curious about the 2 valve engines. Will a 96-98 sohc engine fit in a 65 coupe without taking the shock towers out?

The reason for my query is, I found a 4.6 with an Allen supercharger in a wrecked 96-98 model car that I can have for very cheap.

Thanks for the help. :)

DOHC/SOHC heads don't easily interchange, but if you're planning on just using the 4.6 SOHC with a blower, it should fit (tightly) in a 67+ bay. You might have to notch the towers a bit and/or get custom headers. you should at least do a 99+ PI head swap (if not already done) because the 96-98 heads are junk, the 99+ are much better and no bigger to my knowledge. Still no DOHC heads, but they would definitely let you get some real power out of that supercharger.

I wouldn't bother unless by cheap you mean a few hundred bucks for the whole thing, at most.

edit: In a 65, I would seriously doubt it. THe SOHC is still a few inches wider than the Cleveland/351W, and those are sorta tight. I think they are actually wider than the FE engines, and we all know those don't fit. Might want to take some measurements to be sure.

Yep... the 4.6 SOHC is supposed to be 2" wider than a 460 block. I believe the 460 is 29" wide and teh 4.6 SOHC is 31" wide. To put it in, you will have to notch the shock towers. Then more than likely you will need some one off custom headers ($1k) THEN when you need to pull a valve cover, you will have to pull the motor. The motor is a 90* v-8 so the heads and valve cover sit low. I think you might be gettting in to more trouble than its worth. You might get a motor cheap but its gonna cost $600-700 to get the shock towers notched, $1000 for headers, $200 for the computer / wiring harness... its gonna add up quick. THen its a PITA to figure out all the wiring.

Just my opinion though

<---- Putting a 5.4DOHC twin turbo motor into a 69 stang

one of these days i am planning on putting a 4.6 sohc in a big body vert. they were built for 429's and i think i remember an article somewhere saying they were actually designed to fit the boss 429 since ford was still planning on building the boss 429 in 71 to be able to continue to run it in nascar, but then nascar banned the boss and the hemi.

actually hte problem isnt with the heads as much as the intake. the pre-99 heads actually flow better than the PI heads when the valve lift is above .500. the problem is the "swirl generator" cast into the combustion chamber. remove that and the early heads flow as well as the 99 up 2v heads do. the biggest problem is the intake. the runner entries are rough and cause airflow problems. there is a place that sells a modified intake, and a set of adaptors to put the 99 up intake on the early cars. check out the june issue of 5.0 mustang and super fords for more info, or check out www.livernoismotorsports.com they are the ones doing the conversion. and as far as fitting the 4.6 in the 65-66 cars without removing the shock towers, forget it. the engine is too wide even in the sohc version. the sohc 4.6 will fit the 67-73 cars, and i think the dohc 4.6 will also. the 5.4 is too wide for the pre 71 stangs though.

Thanks for the input folks. I thought the SOHC would be too wide, but it never hurts to ask. As for price, I can probably get the whole parts car for less than $1000. The car was supposed to be a 95 Cobra (5.0), but when I looked it over...
1. It wasn't a Cobra. 2. It was a 96-98 GT with Cobra emblems. 3. Its only redeeming quality was the allen engineering supercharger. 4. It was severly wrecked in the front so the engine and supercharger are questionable anyway.

I will probably buy the rearend out of it, and cut the control arm mounts and weld on some leaf spring mounts. For all of you naysayers out there, Moser engineering leaf spring mounts are available for $19.95 a pair in the Summit Catalog. A local hot rod shop does this sort of thing for narrowed rear cars all of the time. Should be the cheap, easy, and quick way to get rear disk brakes. :nice:

The search for a good 5.0 engine continues...

Don't forget you need the swap pan with pick up.

I'd do it. :)

Why do the same thing over and over it get's old and boring.

Cheap to narror a rear. Wait till you get the total cost $300 axles, $150 narrow,$100 cut off original mounts,$50 new perches welded. Top that off with the initial cost of the rear.

You trying to build something like this for your car?

94-up rear brakes are crappy. :( They are not vented only the cobras were but they are really small, thickness wise.

I said the shop does narrowed rears all of the time, thus they can move a spring mount in their sleep. The 94-98 rear will fit without narrowing. No new axles, using the existing brakes, etc... I can pull this rear for $150 plus $150 to remove existing brackets and install sping mounts... a new Currie 9" without the center section is over $1000 with DRUM brakes!! Add the center section and the Currie goes over $2000. Besides, 9" is overkill for a mild 302. $300-$400 looks pretty good in comparison.

As an added plus, I can upgrade to Cobra style rears in a weekend without fabbing any brackets or other nonsense.

One final note, I was not just going to get the engine. These were 2 complete, but wrecked, parts cars. Thus computer, harnesses, etc are available. Unfortunately, they were not as advertised, so I am trying to make the best of the situation.

dam, i can't speel:-)

350hp 5.0 complete....

$3000. Just add intake, carb, and distributor (and you will have to change the oil pan (even though it comes with one.)

gt40 crate engine, aluminum headed...directly from Ford.

allcarfan,

I am definately considering a crate engine as an alternative to finding a parts car. For the time being, I'll continue to look around locally for parts, until my lady desides the garage needs to be cleaned out. Then the fall back plan to get the car on the street will go into effect, and I will use the FORCE, err the credit card, to get things moving.
