4.6 Triton similarities.

Triton I mean Triton

I just bought my first pickup a 97 F 150
with 4.6L Triton motor. I had
to sell my 89GT in order to get it.

I noted that the motor is a cast iron block and head
motor.

Are there any similarities to the mustang 4.6?

Any idea what mileage I amy get?

Or any problems I should look out for?

I'm going to be the first to say that I thought by the title of the thread that you said you have a question about a Nissan truck. Motor in the F series are Triton motors I'm sure someone will chime in on your questions!

Pretty similar. The late model fuel injected Mustangs are really only cars with truck motors in them.

A lot of parts will interchange. I didn't know the truck had iron heads though. I thought they were AL. Prob iron for durability.

The explorers have virtually the same 4.6, but with an AL block and heads

the motor has aluminum heads. all the mod motors, including the triton motor have aluminum heads.

I too have a 97 F150. Just like Mustang's our year truck is a non-PI. I believe the F150 went PI in 2000 but I'm not positive.

I looked up the 97 F150 and
for the first two years they say
cast iron heads.
In 99 they went to the aluminum heads.
Also they say the spark plugs will blow out of
the aluminum head engines and ford refuses
to recall them.

Maybe I am lucky the 97 has the cast heads for the
spark plug change.

excuse my ignorance what does non PI mean?

I noted in 2005 the
97 F150 made the top 10 list for vehicles
being stolen. That is 8 years old.....

Is it because it is easy? abundant? somehow desired?

PI stands for Power Improved. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the cam, heads and lower intake were all changed to improve torque and hp.
Probably on the list because they are so abundant. The F150 has been the top selling vehicle in the US for over 20 years now.

The cast heads aren't that much better. I haven't blown one but I did strip one out. And they are a pain in the rectum to change on the F150.

I have a 4.6 in my Expedition. I actually get 19MPG on the highway and it has over 225K miles now. No issues whatsoever.

if its a modular motor, it has aluminum heads, they NEVER made an iron head even for trucks. ive been working with these motors for about 8 years now and have never seen an iron modular head, and thats with servicing mustangs and trucks.

the spark plugs launching out was a problem on all the 4.6 heads. the 3v heads have spark plugs that dont want to leave the head. ford refuses to recall them because that would be ungodly expensive and put them under. also the timesert is allowed out of warranty.
