4 lug or 5 lug

OK i was just looking through the stickys on the site and searching stuff and was wondering what is the real reason to have 5 lugs?

Is it to get more rim options? I would assume that 5 lugs are stronger then 4

I know that i can convert my 4 lug to disk breaks to have better breaking power.

Just thought that i would ask

i did it because of the better wheel selection... pretty much all 4 lug wheels look wierd to me. and you get better brakes.

I wanted to keep my ponies, but I wanted Cobra brakes and Bullitts. Since I lived with the ponies for a while on my old 89, and my 91. I went ahead and did it. I was running around on GT brakes up until a couple weeks ago. All I can say is even with rear drums the Cobra fronts kick the snot out of stock 4 lug brakes.

It's really not until you're making sick power and hanging the front end on launch, and even then, it's more about how strong the axles are themselves. People go ridiculously fast on 4 lug axles, BUT I have seen people shear off the lugs on 4 lug axles. 5 lug setups ARE stronger, if only because you have an extra bolt in there. For most street set ups though, the strength difference is a moot point because you'll never come close to breaking the 4 lug stuff.

I did my first 5 lug swap in 2006. I did this because I was doing a 5.0L 5spd swap to a 4cyl auto car, so I figured why not. I had all the parts at the yard so it didn't cost me anything. Only cost me a few dollars for new rear brake shoes/spring kit.

You get to choose from a million more wheels, a few different brake packages and it just looks much better having 5 lugs instead of 4.

At first I thought this was a really weak attempt of doing a ghey voice in text form, then I realized how quick I picked up on it, hahahahaha. So, it was actually pretty effective, and I have to give you props on that one!

I agree for the most part. Once you break the 9 second barrier, you need to go to a bigger 4 lug stud and you will be fine.

lotta ghey talk around here...

Ok...a buddy of mine is telling me he's got stuff I can have *free*to convert to five lug with rear disc, but I want to still be able to clear 15 inch drag lites for track duty.. I believe the rear brakes are lincoln mark..front are 96 gt(not sure about front) will they clear? what rotor diameter can I go to and not have clearance issues?
