4 speed to 5 speed help

84 LX 5 litre.. Has a factory 4 speed.. Would changing it over to a 5 speed be a bolt in affair?? Seems as if the 5 speed was an option that year.. Thanks for any help..

If you use a Tremec 3550, Tremec TKO , Tremec 500 or 600, you just swap the transmission. These Tremecs will bolt right up to your existing bellhousing. A Tremec from one of these models is nearly indestructible if you keep it lubricated properly.

A T5 will require a different bellhousing from the one currently bolted to your 4 speed. T5's won't take to speed shifting and you should prepared for it to break if you drive it really hard.

What exactly is my 4 speed?? and is it any good??

And can you tell me the difference in the 3550 vs. the TKO vs. the 500 vs. the 600?? I remember toploaders, muncies, T 10, and 833', but I am old school.. Can you school me on the newer stuff??

The Tremec 3550 family includes the 3550, TKO, 500 and 600. The 3550 is a drop in for the setup you have now. Look for a used one and you might find a bargain that will shift good and take anything you can throw at it.

The case is the same on all of the 3550 family, but as you go up the list, the torque handling capacity increases and some of the gear ratios change. The TKO, 500 and 600 use a different transmission yoke, and the TKO and 600 use a 26 spline input shaft that requires a 10.5 Chevy disk. See TTC: TREMEC Transmissions for more information.

You currently have an SROD (single rail overdrive) transmission. From a performance standpoint, they suck. Parts are getting hard to find for them, and they are not stout. For mileage purposes, they beat any other 4 speed out there.

I made the swap back in the mid 80's on my 82 Capri. Its still alive and while power shifting is hard on them if you have a good firewall adjustor and a good clutch they will hold up ok. I have never broken it and its been this want since 84 or 85. So if your going to keep your 4 eyed stang and want the advantages of OD then its a slam dunk. I just got the entier tranny, bell housing with the tranny and bolted it in. As for the drive shaft i did replace the yoke but that wasn't for the transmission swap it was due to a grooved yoke from the SROD tranny when it broke.

Tremec Trannys werent popular at that time. I still have the T-5 I installed back then still running hard in the Capri!

There was no SROD in '84. Last model year for that four-speed manual transmission was '83. The T5 was standard in the '83 model year (starting when it first became available....December of '82) and the SROD was optional.
