4-speed transmission problem

Hi all,

First time on this forum. Very nice...

Anyway, I've got a '65 Mustang with a 4-speed manual transmission. Occasionally the shift linkage will bind preventing it from going in/out of gear. Every time this happens I have to climb underneath the car and jiggle the linkage until it frees up again. I had a shop try and adjust the linkage, but it didn't make any difference. I'm considering simply buying a new shifter and shift linkage, but I thought I would give it a go here before I spent all that money.

Any feedback would be welcome...Thanks.

if you have the stock ford shifter, the you will find two rubber gromets at the base of the shifter handle. if they are missing or worn then you ge tthe exact problem you have, i know this cause i had the same problem. also you need to lube the shifter box as well.

Aftermarket shifters also have the same problem occasionally. Most time they bind is when you're hunting for first and slip it halfway into reverse, then back into 1st. A good Hurst shifter and linkage will reduce the chance of this happening, but only the driver's experience will eliminate it.
