$400 9" Rear End - Good Deal???

I've found a 9" rear advertised as being from a '67 Mustang, third member is an open end (not posi) with 2.79 gears, 28 spline axles with snug bearings, backing plates, drums, brakes & hardware. It's disassembled, but complete. He's asking $400.

Does this sound like a good deal?

I've never had a rear end apart, will there be much involved in getting it back together?

I plan on regearing and locking it up, so maybe it will be nice that it's already disassembled, yes?

If it has a 2.79:1 rear end ratio, it's an 8-inch rear end not a 9-inch.

Just emailed the seller and he was mistaken, the ratio is 3.00, has numerous rear ends for sale and was thinking about the wrong one when typing up the ad, so does $400 sound reasonable?

Anything I should look out for when going to look at it?

I've already found a bunch of info on ID'ing a nine inch and tag codes (if it has one)... I'm looking for info on making sure parts aren't broken or everything is complete... Thanks!

I would think that you could find one cheaper. I've got one under a 69 Cougar that would work that I would sell cheaper than that but shipping would probably be too much to justify.

Sounds high to me.
Especially disassembled!
Depending on how far apart it is, you might have to spend plenty to put it back together.
For 400 bux, I would expect to get a disc brake rear.
Way high.

The third member is complete and the brakes are fully assembled, the chunk is out of the housing, as are the axles and brakes...

I'm going to be regearing and truetrac'ing it too if that makes any difference...

I just bought an assembled Versailles rear-end (disc brakes) for $420, sounds like a bad deal to me. by the time you assemble it and replace all the needed parts you'll be way higher than that anyways so take that into consideration. If it has been apart for too long you'll probably need to replace bearings and seals and its going to be a big headache. you can find something assembled somewhere.

I think $400 is too high to begin with, and if it requires shipping, that'll add another $100 or more to the price. Kepp looking locally. You should be able to do a lot better than $400.

I think I saw the same rear on Craigslist. I sold one a few months back that I rebuilt with new wheel bearings bearings, seals and brakes for $300. I think it had 2.75 ish gears. $200 is a fair price. I sold mine because I picked up a Lincoln rear with discs for $400. If he doesn't sell just wait and something else will come up or call the guys at Section Line Auto Wrecking 503-665-8059. That is if you live in the Portland, OR area. Tell them that Darreld, the guy with the convertible mustang sent you. They will treat you right and they have a lot of Mustang parts.

I don't have access to eBay at work so I am a little blind on this comment. It looks like the price is fair for the whole bolt in setup. I think you would pay much more than that for a new Currie setup. FYI, by junk yarding mine I am into it less than $1400, if you don't count the time spending running around town.
