Ok, so I plan on building a 408 stroker for my 91 GT, and I wanted to know what kit anyone would recommend. It needs to have forged rods and pistons, and still be affordable. What kits have you guys used & how's it worked out? I've looked at the Street Fighter kit, but I'm not sure how it preforms compared to some other kits. Thanks...

I'm running one of Scat's kit's which consist's of there SCAT 9000 Crank, Forged H Beam Rods & ARP Bolts, and SRP Forged pistons. What can I say, it came together great and has been working just fine for 2 years now. It was very affordable being that the crank is a specially designed Cast crank which saved me alot of money instead of going with the steel crank. Scat rates there 9000 cranks at 700HP which works great for my combo (See Sig.) The machinist I deal with say's he's always been impressed with Scat products...the quality is great and when it comes to fitment and balancing they make his job alot easier. If you have any questions regarding your 408 build up feel free to ask, I'd be more then happy to help!

What are your intentions with the combo/car? How much HP do you want, NA, N2O or Boosted? Pump gas or Race gas?

Scat Series 9000 Crank, Scat 6.2" I-beam Rods, Probe Forged Pistons from the sounds of it ...

Need more details to be sure though.

Well, the car will be more or less a summer daily drive, but I will take it to the track whenever I can. How much does that Scat kit retail for? I've found the all forged street fighter kit for $1200, how much power are you making do you think with your 408?

I don't know if this helps at all but most of the Coast kits I have seen or heard of are Scat cranks, Probe slugs and rods, Dana rings and bearings and ARP rod bolts. I don't have the 408 but my 347 also came that way.

The Street Fighter kit comes with a Cast steel crankshaft..... If you want a forged kit it will come in a few hundred dollars more.

I've used the SCAT forged crank, SCAT forged H-beams, and SRP pistons in the past with no issues.

Scat profiled 4340 forged crank, Scat 4340 H-beam rods, SRP, Probe, Ross forged pistons good to 1000hp.

CHP, adperformance.com, panhandleperformance.com is where I would go for a stroker kit.

What about relialibity? I would like this set up to last me for quite a while, without worrying about any major problems, how have your 408's held up and I think I will go with the forged crank if that increases the reliability and strength of the motor

Reliablity aint a problem

A forged crank isnt nessecarily more reliable, but its just plain stronger.

With a forged crank you would also get a H-beam rod, that assmebly will hold 800hp with no issues, with a ARP2000 rod bolt upgrade 1200hp+.

How often do your drive your 408? mine will be just about every sunny day in the summer, so it must be extremely streetable. I was looking to make in the 375 to 400 wheel horsepower range w/ some track heat tfs heads? Does this sound like it would make about that w/ an all forged 408 set-up? thanks

Also, can I use the FRPP 5 quart oil pan with a 408 stroker kit? Or do your recommend one of the 7 quart oil pans from moroso or miloden?

In terms of what kind of power you'll be making it all depends on what head's, cam, compression etc. etc. your running. (See Sig)I'm running AFR 205 heads, 10.8:1 Compression, Comp Hyd. Roller Cam etc. etc. and I'm pushing 550+ at the flywheel. I've had this combo/engine for over two years now and I drive it on the street ALL the time and have yet to have a serious problem...I find it actually quite reliable. As for an oil pan I'd go with a 7Qt. Moroso or Canton. Stay away from Milodon...there crap(Bad Experience).
