I have a 67 fastback and was wondering who has put a 460 big block in their rides. How was the fit what parts are needed? I know swap headers and motomnts but which ones fit? any problems? what radiator? just wondering it has a 289 in it now but I really would like a big block and a 460 is kinda different especially around here.

a 460 slips between the shock towers of a 67 real nice. tight fit though, but crites restoration makes a kit for the swap. step up the front springs to a set of 720in/lb springs though, and a good set of 5 leaf rear springs and traction bars. you will also need to step up to a 9" rear end as well.

if you plan on driving it on the street theres no need for a 460 unless your a power junky then you need a 460..id do a rack and pinion conversion and get rid of the shock towers

Thumbs down.

A 460 would be sweet in a 67. If you have the resources to do it and thats what you want, go for it.

Tubular Automotive carries some big tube swap headers too.

Auto Krafters sells them on their site I believe...
However, the headers are cheaper buying them from Tubular.
They don't have a website though.
So shop them at AK's site, then buy them direct if you decide they are the ones for you.

In my younger days I actually had a 460 in my 67 coupe. It is truly a beast that commands respect and tons of fun. I say if you have the ability and the means go for it. If it wasn't for the gas mileage I would do it again in a heartbeat. Now what would be nice would be a fuel injected 460.

www.mpgheads.com
Click on the "Motor Mount/Header Kit" link.
The owner has/had a 460 in his 67/68 fastback, so has first-hand experience.

Does MPG Heads make their own headers, or do they retail?

Those headers in the pic look EXACTLY like the Tubular Headers.
Tubular will sell direct, but they supply headers to a few different retailers, AK for example. I wouldn't be surprised if those are Tubulars.

I have a '69 with a 429, stock shock towers, Crites headers and mounts. It fits but it's very tight. The Crites kit moves the engine up and forward - the carb now sits partially above the fenders. Barely fits under a Boss 429 scoop. The C6 tranny is tight too - had to notch the floorpan to get one of the coolant lines to fit. Crites headers are very nice.

The 69s & 70s need the shock towers notched.

No the 429 wasn't available until '71. '69 and '70 models got the Boss 429, which is completely different, but those cars also got notched shock towers, special suspension components and other goodies.

I have a 429 in mine and it is tight. But it is awesome. Custom fab all the mounts when I put it in. Stock exhaust manifolds but thinking about adding some Crites.

And be prepared for nay-sayers...those are the same people that think 351s are plenty. Big Blocks kick a$$!!

The Boss 429, and 429SCJ, and the 460 are based on the same exact block; it's the Ford 385 Series; the only outward differences are the intake and heads.

Let's keep in mind that the Boss 429 had hemi heads and they were much bigger than CJ heads. A CJ/460 should be easier to fit than the Boss.

Yeah, 460s are very big, but the Boss 429 is enormous!
The Boss had unique towers, spindles, etc... so the thing would fit.
The towers don't need shaving for a 460, but it might help give it some room.
I have never seen towers shaved for a 385 series either, but it certainly could be done.
