466ci Ford Crate Motor -Pics

I have the 466ci ford crate motor in my stang. It produces 550hp and 540 torque. I run the holly 850 carb and 3.73 gear thru a c6 race prep trans. My car does not seem a quick as I think it should be. Some times it feels kind of slugish. Any body else run a 466? Do you feel that your car should be quicker? Maybe its my setup?

I know a lot of guys that run mild 460's in Fox bodied cars. With the amount of power you have you could be well into the 10's at sea level. In fact, a couple of guys at my local track (3000ft) run in the 10's set up that way. They all run less gear though. I don't think a single one of the local big block foxes run more than a 3.55 gear. Go to the track, make some passes, and go from there. You can use your time slips to see how the car runs. With a 460 the car should never feel sluggish, rather, you should always be able to roast the tires. If low end is your problem I recommend starting with the the timing and carb. Check the plugs too.

I plan on adjusting the timming this weekend. Don't get me wrong, the car will roast the tires without breaking a sweat. I think I might be use to the fast reving 302 and it might be perception of the sound of the engine, etc...

Go rent yourself a Civic to drive for a few days, then go back to the mustang. Let us know how sluggish it feels.

466 thats a beastly motor. like the other guys said get it tuned. and run straight headers

no reason why it should feel sluggish maybe ur just used to the power.

i think the cars i drive are slow but when i let other drive it or others are in it they think its silly fast

that should be a 10 second car if u run the right set up with ease

Yes, post pics. If its the car in your avatar it looks good from the small picture. Id go put it on the dyno ($75 for three pulls) and go to your local strip and run it a few times.

you realize the 460 makes all its hp at 3500 rpms so theres really no point reving any higher if ther are no power adders

I will post some pics later tonight. The car has a 2500 stall in it now, I think it needs a 3000 or 3500 stall. All I have ever owned has been 5 speeds, this is the first automatic, I may need to get used to sensation of not shifting.

I just sold a 1988 GT with 20,000 original miles for this car. I wanted something more radical, I guess I got it. It has a 600 lift cam cobra jet aluminum heads, forged crank, etc..850 carb with edelbrock lower, fuel cell, braided lines, etc... I still need to mess around with it and find a hood that fits over the intake and do some tuning on it. I though that maybe that the 466 reved a little slow, not used to the engine sounds yet. You will be smoking the tires and the tac shows 2500 rmp and the car is not even strugeling. Other times you can be cruising at 10-15mph and jump on it and thats when it feels slugish.

3500 stall and it makes all its power at 35 not a good idea ..who installed your tranny they reason i ask is all your kick downs installed right if not it will make you feel like a loss of performance and it could blow your trannie up

Displacement has nothing to do with where a motor will make power. That is the dumbest thing I've heard in a long time. I'm sorry for being an ass but dude that is just plain stupid. Your cam/heads/intake dictate your powerband. Displacement has nothing to do with it. Glad you're not working on my cars.
