Lately my transmission has been acting wierd.

First of all, the 2-3 shift and the 4-3 shift is taking like a huge amount of time to complete like its strugglin to get into 3rd gear.

It also seems to do some wierd **** while accelerating.

Like 3/4 throttle in first gear it will accelerate and then hit second, then slam again like the torque converter is locking up or something?

I dont really know what is going on but it doesnt feel healthy at all.

I was thinking of gettin it rebuilt, jmodded, and throw a 3800 converter in it or something.

I want a 5 speed but dont know how well it will handle the power unless I go with a tko500 or something

I wanted to put a five speed in mine but realized it would cost a lot. So I'm just going to build mine up. If you have the money then go for a five speed but it won't be cheap.

Long 2-3 would be the shot accumulator piston/spring, the 3-4 would be a worn band clutch actuating system due to high heat wear. The slam would be accumulator as well if it's during a shift - if not and it's more like a shudder then it's the TC from heat wear. Although a worn to crap stator might make a slamming.

So basically that means its rebuilt time right?

How much does a rebuild run these days?

For them to take it out and rebuild it to spec, then install?

Take it out yourself and ship the tranny somewhere or drop it off to a reputable manufacture.

You need to make a detailed list of what the car does though so the tech can pay special attention to what it is doing if you are just going to get a rebuild on your current unit.

IF you want to buy a unit:
Ford-AODE.com the Ultimate AODE / 4R70W Performance Transmission Website

Welcome to PerformaBuilt Transmissions - aod, aode, 4r70w rebuilt performance transmissions

Bowler Transmissions | Ford AOD-E/4R70W Performance Transmission (up to 450 ft lbs Torque)

Well you get the idea, there are plenty of options.

justinschmidt1:

And there's TCCoA.com, Tech articles section under Transmissions: "Transmissions 101" by Jerry Wroblewski (former Ford Transmission Engineer). Look for the chapters "Building a Bulletproof 4R70W" -- parts and materials are listed.

I agree that the 2-3 accumulator piston may be sticking or worn (so twisting in the bore). If the OD band is worn, there is no fix other than to replace it. WOT 3-4 and 4-2 shifts are bad for the stock 4R70W transmission.

ok...so thats cool...my trans is done.

It wont shift past second gear so its rebuild time.

Is it best to just have this one rebuilt or should I try and buy a used one somewhere?

I would suggest rebuilding (call Darrin, owner of BC-Automotive.com) because if you buy a used transmission, it may be in worse shape than yours, lol. But, if you know the donor transmission has been treated well and maintained well then it would be OK to sling it in.

[And, for the record, I am not related to Darrin in any way. I just know he is a stand-up guy and does great work.]

GL with the rebuild. Please post back with an update.

LOL, you're not going to rebuild?? In Post #10 you asked about options: rebuild or find a used transmission. I figured if you were rebuilding, Darrin would be a good fellow to discuss the details. Sounds like you're looking for a used tranny.

OK, now I get it!

Toss in a transmission cooler while things are apart -- bigger is better and you want to get a stacked plate type rather than finned tube.

Thanks for the explanation (no kidding) and sorry I misunderstood your post.

Yea...a combination of me beating it + the procharger + I think the biggest factor was 115k and not chaning the fluid for 85k untill it was burnt and damaged.
