Transmission issues 4r70w

I have had a 1996 v6 with the 4r70w tranny in it for a couple months now. When I got it, I was told it sat for 10 years and was parked because the tranny leaks(not wrong there, it pours while it runs). Not long ago, all my gears became drive(neutral would go forward, and reverse would too briefly before stopping) but park still worked fine. 1 through 3 worked, overdrive didn't. At some point I heard a pop, and now my gears are more or less working how they're supposed to. I took it for a drive tp see if I had overdrive back, which I do, but now 3rd is acting like it's going out. It'll shift into it and then pop out at some point. Disabling overdrive "fixes" that issue. But I'm curious as to what is/could be wrong with the tranny. I've pretty much decided that I'm going to swap trannys out of my 98 v8 (its wrecked, but both are 4r70w). But if I can fix the one currently in my car for less work, id rather do that.

What does a transmission shop want to open it up if you drop it off, in your area?

You said it was leaking... You're the only one with eyeballs on it to see where it's coming from. O_o

I don't know of anybody that can diagnose the issues you're having without opening up the transmission. If you're down with doing it yourself, I would hit up YT for a step-by-step. I [hear] that it's not difficult but I've never done one.
