Anone who has done an alt. upgrade opinion will be useful here.

I'm thinking about purchasing a 200a alt off of ebay. I think the pa-performance units are overpriced. I know I will have to splice the second (lower) plug of the stock alt and re-wire it onto the positive terminal post on the new alternator, but besides this and a bracket modification... are there any other modifications needed?

I want to upgrade teh wire between the alternator positive post and the battery positive post with 0ga wire, will I run into any problems with my starter or any other electrical components when doing this? I think I read somewhere that the bottom plug of the stock alt connects to the starter somewhere. Is this right?

The following paragraph is not needed to answer my question, and attached for people who do not fully understand some things in the above text.

I'm upgrading the alt. because of a high powered sound system. My amps will be pushing 1,800w RMS (Continous). Telling me to ditch the system for increased 1/4 mile times will not work. THIS IS A DAILY DRIVER, NOT A TRACK CAR. Please, get over the fact that I'm putting a kick-ass system in a mustang, and the weight may hinder my 'stangs performance. Did I mention that my subwoofer weighs 55 lbs? :D Also, please do not tell me that a power cap is what I need, because it is not. Do some research on power caps and you will find that they are actually more detrimental to your vehicles electrical system than benefical. One last thing: The reason I'm upgrading this connection with 0ga wire can be explained here.

I'd say it sounds good, but if your planning on going all out on this audio set up wouldnt you want to back it up with a name brand alternator that you know you can trust? Just my oppinion. I went with a PA-Performance one and found the install very simple and I opted for the wire upgrade but I dont think it was any 0 gauge... remember NOT to reuse the stock cables with the new 0 guage or whatever your getting... It will say to but eveyone on this site told me to leave those hanging basically cuz you can "fry" your electrical system...

Good Luck

I put my battery in the back and i rewired it with 1/0 battery cable and a 2gauge wire from the alternator to the cut-off switch. If you are keeping your battery in the front engine I wouldn't think you would need any bigger than 2 gauge wire. I bought the alternator you are referring too but the 150amp version and have had no problems at all with it. Also, there is a little plastic deal on the alternator where the charge wire goes, you might have to cut off the part that sticks out to get a solid connection with the larger wire ends.

*****in A! thats what im talkin about 1800 rms that is nuts. I just got a Kicker L5 12" and 600 watt amp and my headlights pracitally shut off while city cruisin. I just bought a 160 amp 3G on ebay this week and i need it so bad. I got some good instructions off the net but im still a little confused, but ill probley get it figured out by the time i get around and do it.

Oh well good luck with the install hope it charges like a sumbitch and bumps the piss out of the stang
