5.0 Convertible Rear Window Replacement

Have any of you guys replaced the junky rear plastic window in 87-93 mustangs? Mine shattered one day when it was cold and i've been driving around with some horrible tape over the rear window. I've heard that when upgrading to a glass piece it has to be unzipped each time you put the top down. I'm probably going back to the plastic for now, I know the top part zippers out but i'm not sure about the bottom part? Can you guys help me out or point me in the right direction?

Factory 87-up Fox convertibles came with glass windows only. Plastic windows are a waste of time and money if you are replacing the rear window IMO. If you have a plastic window now, someone already cheaped out and bought a plastic replacement window.

You do not have to unzip the glass window when you put the top down. In fact if you do unzip the window, you will most likely break it when you put the top down. I believe it says in the manual not to unzip the window when you put the top down.

thanks, i might go that route. How does the bottom attach? Is it something that i can swap out myself?

That I don't know. I am saving up to replace my top and rear glass and have an headliner put in too so I'm gonna have it all done at the same time. I think you could do it, but not sure.

The bottom of the window should attach under the belt molding around the well... I haven't done one before on a Mustang, but the one top I did was a royal pain and its something I'll never do again!

I just had my top replaced and after watching part of the process, trust me, you don't want to replace the window section yourself. It's not an impossible do it yourself project, but unless you have some experience in this area you'll probably wind up with results you won't be happy with.

Yup! Anything to do with a top replacement should be done at a shop. If you want it to work right and look good, I would just save up and have it done by your local convertible top shop.

i have replaced the complete top and then the rear glass again in the last year
its not bad to do its a pain to get to all the bolts but once u have it out all that is involved is measuring and stapling then bolting it back up just make sure your staple gun is set on low low pressure if u have one that u use with air!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My Dads friend who is a professional installer put my rear convertible glass in.

He charged my $125, but that is not what you will pay, I was quoted $200-$300 for the rear glass at a shop. The shop wanted $600-$800 to install the top, but I waited, it is now on my to do list, the "friend" guy wants around $300-$400 for the top install.

It is not that easy.
