Well, whatever you do, don't pass it off as a mustang! I saw a white escort (early 90's) by my campus that had 5.0 badges on the fenders and a big sticker on the back window that spelled out MUSTANG . The mustang sticker did it for me.

I saw a guy that had a Escort with the 5.0 badges on it but he 5.0 around so it read 0.5 it was kinda tackey but... I left my ecsort alone just a drop in K&N filter. Thought about putting a couple of stickers, you know 5 hp per sticker!!! I would love to have that cammer focus.

Any front drive to rear drive conversion is a pretty major undertaking - the smaller the car, the bigger the challenge. Anything can be done - to make it really handle well, the engine needs to be set back, which means significant cutting/fabrication of the firewall and creating a bellhousing/tranny tunner where none existed before. Have fun!

That's the first thing I thought too. I doubt it weighs much less and would be way more trouble than it's worth IMO. It would be different and "cool" because of the rarity, though.

It would be alot easier to swap in the mazda 1.8 gtx engine and you can get quite a bit of power out of them.

I've seen a 5.0 escort years ago, and my friend thought about it. It is possible but I would go carb if I did it. I think there is some specially made stuff for doing this online. also, you could do it with an older lighter escort and drop a lot of weight. or just do a 4 cyl conversion of a notch mustang from the early 80's and drop it to like 2500lbs...

You can pollish a terd all day long...

Once you get everything fabbed up, the car will be hardly lighter than a foxbody and really won't be much of a sleeper because maby at first glance but something just won't be quite right, and people will be able to tell, and for those who you can fool you probally can make the kill with just a 4 banger.

Big time. I used to drive escorts, my first car was a 94LX auto, ran 19.1 at 65mph down the quarter (I got bored watching, wanted to see what it was like to drive down the track) and my second one was a '95 GT 5-speed with the 1.8 DOHC Mazda motor, ran 10.3 in the 1/8th with about mid 75mph trap speed, that was when it was stock and me not knowing how to drive it. I looked into the GTX/GTR engine, the whole motor turbo and all used from Japan was about $3000 and makes over 300hp, but it would still be an escort so I got the real deal, 5.0.

I dont know how long ago that was but i've seen quite a few gtx's go for under $1000 lately. I actually pieced together a turbo kit for my 96 escort gt for like $400.
