5.0 into a 98 GT? How difficult?

I've been looking at a 98 GT that a guy is seling near my area. He is selling it less engine and trans and I was wondering if I should stick to the 4.6 or if it would be easy to drop a 5.0 into it. I would rather go with the 5.0. Besides changing the computer, what other things will need to changed to put a 5.0 into a 98 GT? Thanks for the help!

umm.. im a newbie at this, but im assuming that the tranny, driveshaft would be diff. also maybe have to weld in new mounts since the 302 5.0L and 4.6L engines are diff

the sn-95 5.0 mounts would mount up fine right? you would have to change all the wiring harnesses too (duh) and run fuel lines (I think all 4.6's were returnless). it has no tranny you said, but tranny was different, different ds. how much you getting this car for?

i would just do a 4.6 DOHC conversion though.

Don't put a 5.0L in it...I would put a 4.6L back in it to save the trouble...they are just as quick stock for stock...and you will keep the cars "originality"...I would look for a wrecked 99+ Gt...

Im not going to tell u not to do it, but i also agree that a cobra motor would go better in what ur lookin for. There are advantages in doing a 5.0 tho. For instance, the 94 and 95 GT's were 5.0 on the same body style as the 98, so i would just copy that setup. Second, all parts for 5.0's are on average ALOT cheaper than parts for the modulars. So even tho the 4.6 would probably be better stock, if u put 2k into each motor, the 5.0 would be faster in the end.

If you could find a wrecked 94-95 to pick up for parts, I'd say go for it, but you'll run into a problem come emissions time. They're gonna be looking for the OBDII, since it's newer than 96, and you'll only have OBDI from the 94-95 cars. I'd stick with a 4.6 for that reason. A 99+ GT would be a good way to go, since you'd get the PI heads, but still be able to retain the pre-99 fuel system, so you'd get a return line, and be able to do mods a little easier. What I think I'd do is look for a 5.4 Triton shortblock from a truck, and get a set of the PI heads to go on it. To me, that sounds like a good starting ground for a pretty potent mod motor Stang...

Um...yes...

Besides the slight weight disadvantage...the 4.6L is just as equal performance wise...I've drove and owned both...I think I would know...sorry...

Not if he uses a 96-98 stock 4.6L Motor.

If i was him, i would find a 96-98 SOHC motor for cheap, and swap the 99+ PI stuff onto it. The reason for this is because the 96-98 motors have domed pistons and will raise the compression ratio when using the PI heads and will give you a bit more HP...prob 270-275HP.

To swap a 5.0 in there, you have to change the crossmember, wiring, computer, accessories and other stuff. In the end, you have spent a lot more money than if you went the 4.6 route and you only have a 215-225HP 5.0.

A DOHC conversion would be nice as well, but i myself would go with a PI headed/intake 96-98 SOHC motor and a T-3650.

Please read the above post. 5.0s were faster stock for stock than 96-98 GT's. No need to be sorry when you are wrong.

Just by a whole car unless your looking for a project. 94-98 cobras/ gt's are awesome. I owned a 96 cobra before my 95 and the power was there but they're just plain and simple a pain in the ass to work on. I'm not afraid to takle much of anything, hell i'd grind my own cam if someone gave me the right set-up, but i hated working on my DOHC. It took all day just to remove the drivers side valve cover. So i sold the f**ker and got another 5 liter. Your call man, winter is coming up were all looking for something to do.

Um...okay...so they were a tick quicker...does that mean he needs to put a 5.0L in his 98? I think you missed the point of the entire thread...

We have had 8 page arguments on this subject and I know what I know...I've drove them "all"...if both were straight off the showroom (equal drivers/trans/gears/ the 5.0 would have a slight advantage..."sorry"...The 94/95 5.0L vs. the 96-98 4.6L have the same power rating...and the 4.6L made the same torque just at 100rpm more...yeah sounds like the 5.0 has a big torque advantage  Horsepower at the same rpm also...the track times are very similar...don't automatically "make" a 5.0 faster because it has more cubic inches...look at track numbers or specify why the 5.0 is faster with equal trim...you've got to remember the 4.6L didn't come with options where the a/c could be factory deleted...so while you have a 5.0 that could beat my 4.6L...I have one that can keep me cool in the summer :)

94-95 5.0's came standard with A/C...even the stripped down GTS version.

Last year A/C was an option on a Mustang was 1993

Yes I know that...I meant the foxes...I should have specified...

Actually in 93 I think a/c was standard correct?

The trouble of going thru a 5.0 swap is not worth it when you can do the swap much easier with a "standard" 4.6L...and get the same reletive power numbers...

may be "easier" but if u look at it as power for money, the 5.0 is the better way to go. 5.0 parts are way cheaper than 4.6 parts, and the 5.0's are easier to work on as previously stated. Besides, the guy wants to be unique, so dont tell him not to do it, just tell him how he could do it and leave the option up to him.
