I always changed it in spring. I also would go out and start the car once a month and let it get up to operating temps(plus it always made me feel better listening to it run-blip the throttle/listen to the exhaust lol). Just make sure the garage door is open...don't want carbon monoxide poisoning

If you store the car with old oil, it will sit for months in dirty oil that may have broken down it will attract more moisture, etc. OIl breaks down not only by miles but with time. Again, I may be OCD but cheap $20 insurance for letting a car sit for months.

So what's the thought change oil before storage then again after it comes out of storage?

Old oil tends to contain acids and byproducts of combustion. The oil breaks down over time, fuel washes down, moisture from condensation inside the block, etc etc.

Generally, I wouldn't want that to sit in my engine for a period of time as it can have negative effects. So before my car sits for a period of time, I always change the oil.

I'm not so sure the lightly used old oil would be all that harmful for a few short months so long as it's changed before the car gets back into driving duty. Where I live we have a high amount of freezing and thawing during the winter which will create condensation in the gas tank and oil pan. So it's best to have the tank full and have the oil changed in the Spring time.
