i am in the market for a different car. i would like a GT 5-speed, and dont know what way would be the way to go, a (94-95) 5.0 or a (96-98) 4.6. what are some advantages and disadvantages of these two cars?

im going to do a double post, but only to get peoples opinions who both drive the 5.0 and the 4.6.

thanks!!!

oh no... not one of these again I have a feeling this is going to start another war

The 5.0 guys will more than likely say get a 5.0, the 4.6 guys will say get a 4.6... I say get the 5.0 but I'm a little bias since I own one. Parts are usually cheaper, easier to work on... but the 4.6's are newer, have a higher HP rating, but the parts are a little more expencive and they seem (to me) harder to work on.

The 5.0's stock will run around a 14.6 with a good driver. The 4.6 guys claim they run mid 14's stock but I've never seen one do that before

Then you'll get the people who will say the only 4.6 worth a damn are the 99+ models... The 302 is a strong little motor and has a lot of potential in it which can easily be brought out. I also like the sound of the 5.0 over the 4.6. The best way to figure out which one you like is to go test drive one of each and decide that way.

Well I test drove a 2001 GT before I bought my 94. And having drove the 94 first the 01 GT did nothing for me. The 01 just could not match the torque of the 5.0 The difference in the seat of the pants was unbelievable.

On top of that there are tons more parts available to mod the 5.0 and parts are going to be alot cheaper than the mod motor.

one more question, the GTS...is that a car made by ford, or is it a car that once was a V6 that somebody dropped in a V8?

GTS was made by ford only in 95. Had the option for power windows, locks, seats (i think) but didnt come from the factory with them.

before i got my cobra i drove a 99 5-sepp gt., a 94 auto. gt., 96 5-speed gt., and 97 cobra. Well the cobra was best but price was an issue so I jumped on the 95 cobra i found a week later. Well worth the money since i got it real cheap. My opinion after driving them get a 94-95. You'll be glad you did.

Get a 5.0, the 96-98 4.6's are piles, the 99+ are a little better

You can make either one fast.

One thing I've noticed -- in a lot of areas around the country the 94/95's are holding value pretty well ... so the price comparison becomes 94/95 vs. 99/00. Heck, I just saw a used 2003 GT for $13k. Damn. Hard to argue with that, a 95 is very mod friendly but it's also 10 years old now.

It really depends on what your goals are.

4.6's are the biggest P.O.S. to grace gods green earth....

Wait, maybe it's the 5.0...I'm confused.

Either way, buy a mustang and be done with it. You'll be happy with either one.

Get a 5.0, they have more power and they have more TQ ( even though there both rated the same) but its a known fact that the 96-98 GT's were the slowest most under powered Mustangs in recent memory. The 5.0 is cheaper to mod and has lot more options of what you can add to them then a 4.6 does.

Have you posted in the 4.6 section also? It all depends on what you want to do with the car. The only thing I would do with the 4.6ers is throw a blower and some common bolt ons, be done with it. They were real dogs, but if you want to wrench and 'work' on your car get a 5.0. The aftermarket is just now catching up with the 4.6, but for 5.0 there is endless mods. It's all about how much you want to spend 4.6=expensive 5.0=well you know

5.0 has a cheaper aftermarket than the 4.6 .... the modular motor has 4 cams opposed to 1 in the 5.0. I'd go 5.0... no replacement for displacement.

5.0 are cheaper but like mentioned they are also 10yrs old thing are going to need replacing. A newer 4.6(98) will have fewer miles and less wear and tear(if they were taken care of) parts are pretty much endless for the 5.0 so if your plan are to mod a mustang it would be easier on the wallet the a 4.6 period.

I haven't read any of the posts besides the first one. Excuse me if I step on any toes.

I have a "slightly" modified 5.0 Mustang and a 4.6 T-Bird. I prefer to drive the Bird for a daily car.

You are asking a bias group of people, so of course the opinion is going to be bias, and most that are bias have never driven a 4.6 to begin with.

For those who say 4.6's suck, they are wrong. A 98 GT on BFG's with just pulleys and Flowmaster 50's goes 14.2's all day long. I know because it's my Uncle's car.

For those who say the 4.6's are hard to work on, shouldn't be working on cars to begin with. They are no more difficult to work on, just a bit more involved.

For those who say "no replacement for displacement," or something to that affect that essentially says "the 5.0 is better," tell Bob Cosby that. He's got a DOHC 4.6 that is street legal, and NMRA F/S legal, and he goes 11.40's all day long, on radials. Show me a 5.0 that can do the same. Cripe, show me a H/C/I 5.0 in the 11.40's, because there sure isn't one that is F/S legal.

To the original poster: I'd go out and test drive each of them and decide for yourself. There is a seat for every ass.

Joe

5.0 sucka mc..

jus kidding.kind of a loaded question you ask, fraught w/ biased opinions inside 5.0 thread i might point out..

fast is fast. it all boils down to money..pushrod, mod motor, big block..small block, rotary, its all based on the cars intentions..i personally love the sound of the mod motor cars: xpipe an after cat.. its like music.. but the SOTP a pushrod motor gives is so cool..parts are defintly cheaper( unless your talkin out the 94-95 parts.. but they are also very much wrench friendly to a shade tree mechanic.

I like 5.0's for thare aftermarket. If the 4.6 and 5.0's aftermarket was the same I would probably go with a 4.6.

Hey, Nothing on my "OLD" 95 GT Mustang needs replacing. Maybe it's because it only has 5,100 miles on it. LOL

Well i own both the 4.6 and a 5.0.. ( 01 and 94) and i Must say.. they are both fairly even matched, as in new condition.

Of course when buying a 94-95 your looking at a 10 year old car, which well have its downfalls.. but then agian they are easy as shi* to work on and parts are common.

For the 4.6 Dont waste your time with the 96's.. more rather go for the 99+ 4.6's, since they are more mod friendly, and have alittle better power output.

Get the 5.0 , bottom line!
