Well not really... How can you really tell them apart when there is no intake or valve covers and the serial number is not readible? I hear the 302 has 12 bolts for intake to heads while the 351 has 16.

I think the distributor is different? any other clues.

The 351 is a bit larger than a 302 because the deck is 1.3" taller. Also the 351 has 1/2" head bolts and the 302 has 7/16 head bolts. The distibutors and oil pans are different but it is hard to tell the difference by just looking at them.

This is the easiest and most accurate way that I know of to tell a 351W from a 302 if it is fully assembled.

If the lower water neck bolt is not behind the waterpump, but slightly over it, then it is a 351. If The only way to get the lower waterneck bolt off is to reach behind the WP, then you have a 302.

The 351 has 12 intake bolts, just like the 302.

the absolute easiets way to tell. assembled or not is to look right above the timing cover area, if it is a 302 the deck will be cut at basically the edge of the water passage and the 351 will have about 1inch before the deck...
