hey guys,
i guess this is my mid life crisis resolution. i'm buying a 68 coupe rolling shell with no motor or trans. i'd like to swap a 5.0 fi with a 5 speed into it. i searched around and didn't really find any good info on this swap. i was wondering if anyone could tell me what's involved and if the benefits of fi are worth the trouble. i sourced a 93 engine trans wiring harness and ecu for 800and want to spend another 700 on parts, hopefully some of that money on speed parts. is this realistic or should i just go with a 351 with a carb.
thanks in advance, joe

well, my personal suggestion would be a fuel injected 351, but I am a big fuel injection junkie...anyway the 5.0 is the same basic engine as the 289/302...the diffferences being things like siamese bore in the 5.0, a roller cam, different heads, etc, but still the same basic block...in other words as far as bolting up goes, it will bolt right in using either the stock tranny or the t5....as far as the t5 goes, if you are using it with the 5.0 all you will need is a t5 tranny crossmember that a lot of manufacturers sell for the classics...maybe some other stuff, I'd look through the conversion kits that places like mustangs plus sells....now for wiring, while they sell those kits too I honestly dont think they are worth the money, wiring isnt hard, you just have to understand wiring diagrams...but if you dont like wiring, buy that kit too

p.s. from what I understand the 351 will bolt up just as easy

www.fordfuelinjection.com

They have the diagrams and also you can order harnesses from them. Supposed to be the best harness but I've heard they are crazy slow at getting stuff out to you.

you'll also need to redo the fuel system on the car. there's a lot of debate on the best way to do it, but you can also get a "kit" from some of the mustang guys, Ron Morris has one at the link below.

www.ronmorrisperformance.com is a good source for some of the EFI swap parts, I've been extremely happy with the few things I've gotten there (speedo cable, rear leaf perches).

as for installing the T5 in the car, think ahead on how you want to do the clutch - cable, linkage, or hydraulic. if you want to use the original style linkage, you'll need to get a Z-bar pivot ball that'll bolt to the engine.

one other item - the underhood shocktower to firewall brace won't clear a 5.0 intake. you'll have to either make a tubular one or go with one from TCP, Laurel Mountain Motorsports, or other.

i just finished the EFI swap into my '67 fastback, so I can provide some tips...

If you do a search on the forums here you should be able to find something like 6.87 billion threads about T5 swaps and efi swaps.

One main thing you'll need to do is change the oil pan and oil pump pickup to the front-sump style, and add a proper dip stick. Check info in this thread and others that reference this conversion.

I also think Mustangs Plus has an EFI conversion step-by-step procedure on their web site.
