So many have done it and now I want to. I have a set of 17" wheels off a 01GT that I can get for pretty cheap.
My question is what is the least expensive way (cheapest) to do this conversion. I was told that axles from a Ranger pick up would work? We have a set of axles from a 96 Ford Explorer. They are in great shape. Can these be used in the rear? Also what can I do for the front. Can I just replace the rotors or due I have to replace the spindles.
I am just seeing how enexpensive this can be done. I know if I convert to disc on the rear I need to replace the master cylinder. If I leave it as drums then I dont.
What can I expect to pay to do this going 4 wheel discs -vs- just changing rotors and axles??
If I do this im sure someone will help me out and buy my wheels from me.

http://mjbobbitt.home.comcast.net/~mjbobbitt/mustang/5lug.html will definitlely help you out.

I have done four conversions, three of them using SN-95 spindles and one with modified lincoln rotor's, I wouldn't recommend the lincoln route it was a pain, as the above site will mention it all depends on the type of wheel you are running. also you may want to check out corral.net wheel threads for some info.

As for cost's I have done the SN-95 swap for under $400 that would include, spindles, calipers, rotors, pads, rear axles, drums, shoes, gearlube, friction modifier.

If going 4, wheel disc which I hope to do this winter it's gonna cost a bit more, and I would recommend upgrading to cobra hardware.

They are 31 spline units where as the rangers are 28 like the mustang stock.

cheapest is the ranger rear and rotor conversion in the front. those new wheels may have a problem with the dust cap interfering with the wheels center caps though... A SN95 conversion can be cheaper if you find a good deal....but its more work. I did the cheapo conversion and it was very simple....i bought the 50resto kit for 400 bucks.....i didnt want used rotors/drums on my car

That kit come with all that is needed.?? You also state that I may have an issue with the wheels? They are the stock wheels from a stang. The wheels I currently have now had an issue with the front strut and dust caps, so I had to use a 1/4" spacer to get them to fit. I guess I would need the same for those? And to the other poster your saying no to the Explorer axles.?

I guess I can go to there site (50resto) and see what the kit comes with.

Thanks guys.

ya youll have the same dust cap issues with those....yes the 50resto kit comes with everthing....rotors, drums, axles, bearings, seals, and Royal Purple fluid...all new.

if you piece it all togeather its like 60.99 for each rotor new, 100 for some used axles, 27.99 for each drum, and 20 or so for oil plus all the bearings and seals....its shows the same bearings you get are 32.99 a piece

thats 360 plus axle seals...and your getting used axles...

im sure you could piece it togeather cheaper, but i dunno.

Just go the SN95 Route if you want wheels to fit correctly!

Go with the SN95 kit or you will have to run a 225 up front with a 3/8 spacer and longer studs

Mine cost $200...with Ranger axles and drums..I splurged and bought the Maximum Motorsport Steel Braided lines that bolt right up to the SN95 caliper. Easiest way to go. The MM lines are $75. I also bought the Ford Racing Rotors which were $140. This brings the total $305.

Ps Get the 94-95 spindles or the front will stick out past the fender. Or you could get SN95 rear axles which are a little longer than the fox axles. Look at the front wheel how it sticks out a little more than the rear..These Spindles are from a 98
V6. Which is the same as the V8.

I have 4cyl brakes, so I used Ranger rotors for my conversion. About $24 a piece, and $23 for the "good" cheapo brake pads from AutoZone. I also needed new dust caps for the rotors as the Rangers are a little bit larger, they are about $5.

For the rears I used Ranger axles from the JY which costed me $90, and got some good drums for free. Then I got a couple quarts of gear oil (open rear at the time so no friction mod.) and some bearing grease and went to town.

All in all I had a little over $200 in the setup.

Plus they use an offset pumkpin, and different brakes, so axle lenghts would not be the same

MM makes those Lines for Fox Stangs so that you do not need an Adapter on the Passenger Side, I have them on my Stang and they are very high quality!

I'm considering this route for my brother's '83 GT with the smaller running gear such as yours. What wheels are you running?

I was told you need to have both left side axles from aRanger to make it fit. Also the stance wont be as wide with those. So there may be an issue with the wheels not working.

With the two left side axles, the same width will be retained as stock, and the stance will also be what you had before the swap. If you don't go with the SN95 front, you will be limited when it comes to using the dustcaps for the wheels you choose on the front.
