5 lug guys...have a few questions?!

Im about to buy some parts from a buddy from his 95 GT to convert my car to 5 lug. Here is a list of stuff I'm getting from him...everything is from a 95 GT:

4 - 95 GT pony wheels
2 - front calipers
2 - front rotors
2 - 28 spline rear axles

I'm getting this stuff for $100. I know I should use PBR front rotors, but I'm just doing this under a budget for now...and plan to do cobra fronts eventually.

I know I need 94-95 spindles, rear calipers, rotors, and e-brake cables...I think I may need lower ball joints from a 94-95 or I heard I can use spacers? Do I need the rear backing plates from a 94-95 rear end? What else will I need to finish this conversion? Master cylinder? Perportion valve? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

if you are truly on a budget for right now switch to ranger axles/drums in the rear. that way you most likely wont need to upgrade the MC or PV.

the 95 axles wont be the right length, you need the ranger bronco II / aerostar axles and drums. heres the interchange

5 lug setup:
Rear: Ranger left side rear axles. Or Aerostar right rears...heres the interchange
Aerostar '86-91 Rear Axle; Ford, R.
Aerostar '92-97 Rear Axle; R.
Bronco II '84-90 Rear Axle; L.
Ranger '83 Rear Axle; 10 bolt hsg cover, L.
Ranger '84 Rear Axle; 10 bolt hsg cover, 7-1/2" ring gear, L.
Ranger '85-86 Rear Axle; 7-1/2" ring gear, L.
Ranger '87-92 Rear Axle; L.

that will mean you don thave to do anything to your rear brakes, you pull the pumpkin cover, the 2 c clips in the axles put em in and slap on the drums.

for the front if you dont want to get a bigger master cylender and or brake booster the bigget about you can go is the 95 calipers ( they have one cyl, not 2 like pbr's and the cyl is about a 1/4 inch bigger per side than the stock fox brakes)

i just finished putting my front swap on yesterday, i used 95 spindles, hubs, calipers, you need the brake lines (soft ones) and the conversion piece for the hard to soft brake line on the passenger side ( http://www.latemodelrestoration.com/iwwida.pvx?;item?item_no=LRS-2078HDW 1&comp=LRS ) then the rotors, and i got prothane bushings for the control arms and moog balljoints for a 94-04. if you use a fox balljoint you have to put a .330 spacer on the top of the spindle where you tighten the castle nut onto the balljoint or you'll run out of threads.

so the list complete is

95 calipers
rotors and pads for a 95
95 spindles
95 hubs
95 soft brake lines in the front
the adapter fitting i linked above
and if you use fox balljoints a .330 spacer for each side

then the rear you need
2 axles from 2 different rangers or aerostars
and the same drums from the above two cars 9" drum (not 10")

Yes you will need 94-98 rear caliper brackets (any mustang) or 99-04 GT's.

You will need 94-95 spindles and hubs. Any 94-95 mustang will work.

Those axles (94-98) will work fine if you intend to use factory mustang wheels (17X8). In fact, this is what comes with the Ford kit.

If you want to go with a wider wheel and tire out back, then use the ranger setup.

Yes, you will need two 0.330 spacers to install 94+ spindles on the fox ball joints.

That helps alot guys! Thanks! I will be going to the bone-yard here soon. Most likely next week. I guess I need to find a 4 cyl. or 3.0 V6 ranger or Aerostar (9" drums) since the 4.0 has the 10" drums. Is there anyway to tell if the axles are damaged or bent? Obviously if the splines are twisted they are junk, but kinda hard to spot a bent axle...I would think. And does anyone know if I need a bumpsteer kit for sure?

Budget swap...get some spacers from Lowes and put two or three over each spindle on the ball joint stud, then put the crown nut on. I say two or three because you will need the correct spacing to get the cotter pin in place and stay tight.

Get the front brake lines too.

For the rear...if you use 94-98 axles shafts, you need the back plates, anti-moan brackets, brake lines and e-brake cables. Keep in mind that you are going to have to run the 16X7 Ponys for now. If you upgrade in the future you will need to stay with a 17X8 wheel from a factory Mustang, or if you go to 17X9 you will need to get an S197 17X9 with a +45mm offset to keep them from sticking out.

Dont listen to the person who said that 94 axles wont work. I'm running 94 axles in my car and they work just fine, they're just 3/4" wider than stock length axles, so the wheel will be closer to the edge of the fender than stock.

FYI, if you go with the spacers, this is how they install.

I made these myself, but a vendor out there does sell them. Or you can use 5/8" HARDENED washers.

If you want to use a 9" or 10" rim, use fox length (ranger axles).

If you want to use the ford factory 17 X 8 five lug wheels, use 94-98 axles (0.75" longer than fox). This is what I'm using with 98 cobra wheels.

Do not use 99+, they are about 1.5" longer PER SIDE.
