I'm about to convert my 1989 Mustang notch to a five lug. I'm wondering if there is any other work, other than going to 5 lug, I have to do to use 17x8 cobra rims? Like these :

you can get those rims in a 4 lug from 5.0resto....thats probably what im gonna do when i get the money

Yeah theres many places that make those rims in 4 lug. Steeda also makes a kit for rear rotors if you don't like drums. Its around $800 for everything. Heres the cheapest place I've seen chrome 03 cobras,

Thanks for the quick reply and the link. I didn't think you could get those rims in 4 lug. Thanks! If I did buy those rims, 17x8, will they bolt right in? What about backspacing? Thanks.

There is a big difference between the '99 Cobra rims, and the '03 Cobra rims...

They don't make 4-lug '99 Cobra rims, you will need to put SN95 spindles in the front....

As far as I know they should just bolt in.

nope.. those arent available in 4 lug.. you will have to do the 'better' 5 lug conversion with sn parts, not the LSC rotors.

Ive got 5 lug 98cobra wheels (17X8) on my 90GT. They work fine except the fronts rub slightly on the front ground effects piece on the lower front wheel well. This only happens when I turn or sometimes when I go in reverse and turn the wheels. I currently have 245/45 17 tires. I would suggest getting 245/40's or 255/40's so they will be slightly smaller in diameter.

Thats a big negative on the 4-lug for those. And those can be found for alot cheaper like he said. Also, you dont need to do the spindle swap. Just run some spacers, and 5-lug rotors. You can convert to 5-lug on the front end for less than $90. If you dont mind keeping drums, then you can do the back for about $100 too. Imagine a 5-lug conversion for less than $200. And for everybody who thinks you cant use non-center cap rims with LSC rotors, your wrong. IT looks, and drives fine. Add 14/16th spacers on each side and it clears fine, and moves the tire away from the inside where they usually rub.

I'm dropping a 5.0 in too. Everyone i've talked to said I had to change the front spindles because of the extra weight. Or can I use the 4 banger spindles? Thanks

i think they were talking about the springs. Im pretty sure they all had the same spindleslike how the 94 and ups all use the same spindle. And if you want the front end to look lowered and have good weight transfer when launching, then keep the 4 cyl. springs in.

I take that back, the spindles are different and if your going to change the spindles then your best to just get the 94+ up stuff since your changing anyways.

the spindles/brakes are different. The 4cyl cars had the smaller brakes like my 86GT does. The 4 cyl brakes work but their not great. When the 86 was my daily driver, I warped rotors on a pretty regular basis. If you do keep the 4cyl brakes, the easiest and cheapest way to go 5lug is to use ranger rotors. They are the same as the 4cyl mustang but in 5lug. Thats how I converted my 86.

Forgot to mention, there are no center cap issues with the ranger rotors like there are with the lincoln rotors.

the ranger rotors are too small, and wont provide good braking. Go for 87-93 spindles and rotors, or 94+ stuff
