5 speed tips...

hey soon i am getting my car swapped as you all know. I can drive a stick but i dont know how to DRIVE a stick, if you know what i mean.

its hard to explain, but what are some tips to get the most out of my car with the 5 speed. with my AOD now i just floor it and hope for the best.

only thing i can really do is punch it around 35 mph and it will downshift to 1st at 3100 so its making power. but that sucks.....

so whats a good rpm to shift?

also it will have 3.90s if that would matter...

Best advice I can give you is to go slow while you learn to handle the power and control. Doing doughnuts in an empty parking lot is one thing, but driving crazy on the roads is another.

Take your time, the shifting will come naturally.



P.S. I shift (on a stock tach) @ 6200

start your shift at 5200.....a shift lite w/ a 5200 chip works great

you finish the shift about 5500-5600

launching will be a whole new experience for you....even w/ stock gears

gear it hard, get some tires, and your car will be 2 full seconds faster than it was w/ the aod

Do not go out and try to drive like a champ. Get used to that car for at least a month before you are absolutely comfortable. Driving a 5 speed 5.0 is very different from driving half of the 5 speed 4 bangers out there. If you screw up, chances are the car will bite you back.

i learned stick on a straight six f150, and it was hard to drive, than i got pretty good at it, than i bought the stang, and it was like drivin an automatic it was sooo easy lol u get used to it, u get a feel for it

launching is very difficult takes alot of practice and learning your car just do it alot and u will catch on just remember u dont wanna spin.

Yeah wait until you know how to handle the car before you start to go nuts with getting shift points and launches down.

Launch soft, get your right foot to the floor, and never let up! Kick the clutch and hit the next gear at the desired shift RPM!

Agreed. Experience is the most important thing. Launching takes time. My method on the street with drag radials is bring it to 3000 and slip the clutch sorta fast so the car doesn't bog or stall, then punch it out till the next gear. With the right tire and suspension, I would love to just dump the clutch at 5000, but with stock parts it will break parts and just spin the tires. Practice

I agree with the other guys. Just drive around town for a couple weeks to get used to 5 speed and what the car does. Try downshifting and taking off and things like that. Once you get a feel for the car, then worry about driving agressively.

Get used to the mustang first. Drive in all weather conditions taht the car plans on being driven in. If youre gonna drive it in rain, dont stomp on the throttle, or youre gonna watch youre rearend pass you going down the road towards that inmovable telephone pole. Play it safe, and have fun.

Yours wasn't, but run a stock T5 and have been powershifting for years now! Some people get lucky, some don't... I for one have had stock rear, stock tranny, and neither has had an issue! And I launch on slicks and powershift every track pass!

I've also had good luck with trannys, and rear axles etc. I guess its just how you drive it!

totally true. i just went to the track for the first time last weekend and launching is a lot harder than it sounds on here. my best 60' was a 2.4 lol.

that sucks man, the funny thing is i had to rebuild my tranny too, i slammed the ***** out of it into gear and broke the plastic pieces on the shift fork, but a short throw will fix that

Ive been trying to kill my tranny over the past summer. I powershift the **** out of the thing and it just comes back for more. The reason that I am ditching it is because the second gear synchro is shot and its just easier to throw in another tranny.
