This is a stupid question, but I want to be sure. I am doing a 351 swap into my 89 lx. The 351 is balanced for 28 ounce. I have a 28 ounce flywheel and harmonic balancer for it. I was expecting the flywheel to weigh alot less or look a little different than the 50 ounce that was on the 302, but it feels like it weighs the same. Is the 28 ounce in reference to how it is balanced? or should it actually weigh less that the 50 ounce?

the 28oz is reffering to the counter balance that is mounted to the flywheel, which weighs 28oz. The flywheel can be heavier or lighter, depending on the brand.

a stock style 5.0/5.8 flywheel weighs about 30 pounds, just the counter balance that is different weight. My Fidanza aluminum came with both 28oz and 50 oz weights

The flywheel should be matched to the assembly just like the damper. Other wise you'll have a serious vibration.

Deleting this post. Hadn't had my coffee, sorry. If your engine is balanced for 28 oz, use a 28 oz. flywheel.
