About two days ago, my car started making a whining sound. It sounds like the whine of a kenne bell almost exactly. Also, kinda like the sound of when you back up your car. It does it in every gear but is louder in 2nd and considerably louder in 3rd. What could this be? Does anyone know? I'm leaning towards the clutch maybe. I dont know. it actually kinda sounds cool but I know it's gotsta go.

thanks
Chris

Thats the sound of an old, beat up T5 - no big deal. Mine makes the same noises and I don't hesitate to flat shift it. She's still holding up fine. I don't think you have much to worry about.

check the fluid in your tranny, or have your rear end check out.
thats not a good sound.

The car is in like perfect shape and near stock. I dont think the tranny could be beat up. It is running fine at the moment but I am scared, whatever it is, is going to get worse. I'll check out the fluid. It straight up whines in third. In fifth, it doesnt really whine so much as just make a kind of vibrating sound. If i move the shifter around (in gear) while its making the sound, the sound stops or gets louder. 1st and 4th gear seem the least effected. Again, this car is in almost new shape and only has 77,000 miles. The previous owners took good care of it. I dont know. I guess i'll get it diagnosed somewhere.

I would take it in, and get a free inspection some where, checking the color of your tranny fluid etc. Don't be mislead, alot of people say the car was taken good care of, but this is a V-8 and who can resist slamming the gears, and seeing how much rubber you can lay down.

Once you get it diagnosed, shop around first. I've found thay big name transmission shops charge alot, and don't always do a good job.

I just installed the triax last night. It got a little louder but it was almost as loud with the stock shifter.

Just and update on my problems with the "supercharger whine". They said the idler pulley was bad as well was the water pump. Kinda had that thought, second time that the the water pump has gone bad however....

I would imagine the water pump has somethign to do with the cooling system think its alright to drive down to Florida from PA (leaving Friday)as the parts probably won't be in by then?

i had an annoying whine for a while too. i also had my exhaust checked but it was fine. the whine would get louder as the rpms went up. turns out the tensioner pulley was bad. cost me 15 bucks for a new one at o'rileys and took about 45 minutes to swap out. might want to check it out.

I wonder if maybe its the idler or tensioner pulley?

Chris, if it sounds like it's coming from the gear box, that's where it's coming from. The reason second and third whine so bad are because those are the gears that are getting hammered, especially third. All it takes is someone who's never driven a stick, or isn't that good at it. Third gear is usually the first one to go, so it sounds like your car has lived a "normal" life. My car has made that noise for as long as I can remember and the car has been in the family since somewhere around January '98. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

Yeah my 2nd whines and the 3rd whines alot louder, it's cool. Reminds me of GranTurismo. I'm pretty sure it's natural, most people have that and it gets louder with aftermarket shifters since they have no isolation.

I think I have the same whine. It's worst on 2nd and 3rd gear. It only whines when I step on the clutch or depress the clutch a little. It's getting annoying as hell. Please help.

I agree with the comment above - check your fluid levels (especially tranny oil and gear oil).

mine started making this "s/c" sound, only it started when the car scraped hardcore after i tried going up an incline (just dropped it--not used to having to worry about this). i don't think mine sounds as "cool" as you all's does. it sounds more like a dying cat shrieking rather than the nice whistle of a s/c. gonna take a look under the car soon to see what in the hell's making the noise...this sucks...

that's sounds like your throwout bearing to me--i have that same problem (aside from my deadcatwhine from scraping).

adjust your cable, get an aftermarket quadrant and/or firewall adjuster and replace the bearing (cheap, like $20).

Ive had the same problem and still do, the s/c whine sound from the tranny. I can tell you for a fact that it is not: Water pump, Idler Pully, Clutch, Throw Out Bearing, Clutch Cable, or Shifter. I have had all of these replaced at points after buying the car, and none make the whine go away, I think its just a defect in our tranny's and unless you want to get a brand new one there isint much you can do about it, just let it whine and tell your friends and ricers that its your blower.

My T5 does the same thing. I started doing it after I started building horsepower. They aren't rated for very much over 250 hp. That's not saying they won't hold up but things wear out much faster. Mine has 117,000 miles and is now behind a pretty stout 347. Sometimes going into third it'll actually take the shifter out of your hand.
