Hey what do you guys think about this trans package?

Has anyone had any experiences with CP or this package?

Trying to figure out stuff for my Eleanor project...

I've heard good things about the T-56, and I may end up putting one in my car. The rest of the kit, I have no idea.

you can get a Tremec 4615. (handles up to500 ft/lbs torque) from www.latemodelrestoraction.com for half the price of that T-56

Not a huge deal, but it is spelled with (2) e's, and no a's.

I just don't get why people who want performance for a carbed car are so drawn by the T-56? Only 4 useable forward gears, the gears are wider ratio, 2 overdrives, a cast aluminum bellhousing.

Maybe I just haven't had enough people explain to me how a Richmond is a lot better. It takes a bit for things to get through my thick skull sometimes.

Tremec is so common, I think that's why I tend to think I want one. Maybe I want a different number of Tremec, I haven't done enough research. I have read some posts from people who have T56s and are happy.

Teach me!

Re

I'm going with the roush 427r motor. If I match it with the T56 I think it will make for a very unique setup. This kit looks to be pretty nice but I'm not sure. When I emailed them a response came back that said they were going through new ownership and that email and sales would be down for awhile.

Big cams and carbs don't like to cruise at low rpm's. Modern engines have little overlap and fuel injection. These are good for 1800rpm cruising on the interstate. To use a .63 ot .5 od you'll have to have a big gear in back. Or a tame motor.

OK, I'll just give you some of my reasons for going with the Richmond over the T-56. Keep in mind that in my decision process cost never was a factor, I merely wanted what was best. Here goes:

  • The T-56 only had 4 forward useable gears compared to the RODs 5
  • The T-56s gears ratios were farther apart, hence less performance than the ROD
  • The T-56 had 2 overdrives that were about 2#% (read twenty something percent) apart. 2 ods seemed useless, in my opinion, on a non computer controlled, carb'd car
  • The T-56 shifter is more sloppy than the side mounted Long setup on the ROD
  • The T-56 is bulkier and designed to have most of it's bulk up high (since late model cars have them higher in the tunnel). ROD was like a long toploader so install was easier
  • At the time, the T-56 only had an integrated aluminum bellhousing, the ROD could be used with most aftermarket toploader scattershileds

I think people get all giddy about the T-56 because they are used in late model performance cars. But keep in mind they are there to pump up the mpg not the performance. You'd be better off using a 5 speed with 1 overdrive. Like Brian said, to use the super low overdrive you either have to have a computer controlled engine or really crazy gears. I opted to go with a higher first gear and keep the rear ratio at 3.50.

Caleb,
If you are dead set on the components in that kit why not get them yourself? If they are packaging the pieces they must be making a profit. Cut out the middle man. They even give you a nice shopping list

T56 transmission
shifter
hurst handle and 6speed knob
Hurst shifter boot
crossmember kit
aluminum bell and blockplate
McLeod 3-piece clutch
Ford t/o fork
roller pilot
McLeod flywheel
bolts for flywheel, pressure plate and transmission
JMC hydraulic slave kit
transmission mount
slip yoke
You will need a clutch pedal and your driveline should need to be shortened

In fact, McLeod can sell you most of those items direct (including trans). I would also check with McLeod to see if they have a scattershield for you application. Unless of course you don't like your feet

OK I am sold on the Richmond. Now will I be able to back a 428 with one and how much do you think it will cost to convert from a C6.

Re

I will say that this new info makes me lean more to the rich now. I'm still not sure, I think I was dazzled a little by the T56 being in the Eleanors, and me building a replica it only seemed right to go with the T56. But now I think I'm reconsidering.

You can read about my swap here: http://www.2mfffabshop.com/rod.htm

You can learn more about the Richmond here: http://richmondgear.com/01pdfs/pages20-24.pdf

Note, for Ford big blocks you will have to cut the pilot some

I still think I've decided to go with the ROD do to all this new info but I've been reading a lot of posts that the ROD shifts very rough and that a lot of people that have had problems with the ROD was with the first wave of them that had flaws. Have they fixed those flaws? And gp001, since you already have one installed, how is the performance?

By the way Thanks for all this help!

Anyone that had shifting problems set the trans up wrong. The shift linkage has to be adjusted properly when you first get the trans. If people do not do this they could have problems. We have always adjusted them with the trans off the car. Some people have done it in the car and have not gotten it correct. While it is not hard to adjust, it would be hard to see in the car. Also, many people use to heavy of a gear oil or don't use synthetic. My buddy had an older version in his vette and I have the newer version. The only real difference was the location of the vent. Neither one of us have ever had any problems. His vette has about as much power as my car and we both drive like lunatics.

I did the swap with the TKO III and it is a ton of work. But I'm extremely happy with the results. I don't see much use for the 6 gears. I went with the 2.87 first gear set-up with the .82 top gear. 3.70 out back and it screams... I'm still having trouble with hooking first gear though
