i'm kinda new to the classic mustangs, most of my experience is with late models. i recently bought a 1964 1/2 mustang coupe with a d code engine. the car is rough but it runs and it is all there. i know the k code is the hipo engine which everyone wants, but i've read that the d code is a rare engine option and was wanting to find out if having the d code ups the value over say and 2brl 289. i'm getting ready to restore the car and i'm trying to decide if i want to restore it to original or go a more restomod route. i really like the restomods, but would it be stupid to do it to this car.

I did a 64 1/2 Convertible a few years ago with the D code 289. It is a low compression 4 barrel. In my opinion, absolutely more valuable than a 2 barrel 289. It is my understanding, and I could be mistaken here, that in 1965 they introduce the A code 289 4 barrell that was higher compression.

I did a full on restoration back to original with that car. It was a convertible and had some very early features so I felt I had to restore it as the car was such early (April 18th, '64) production date. Had it been a later car or a coupe, I would have restomodded it for what it is worth to you and I considered doing so for most of the restoration period. In retrospect, however, if I had restomodded the car I may have done just as well or better selling it. Bolt on changes can always be undone. If you plan to keep it, do what makes you happy.

this car is an early build date to, april 2. i think for now i'm gonna restore it to original but i'll probably end up changing my mind about a million times before all is said and done.
