65 Key & lock cylinder

I am replacing the ignition switch & lock cyl. in my 65 Mustang. I had no trouble getting the old key cylinder out using a paper clip. I got the new switch put in without problems.
Now I'm having trouble getting the key cyl. to go back in & mesh with the switch. I have tried indexing the cylinder & switch several ways, but it won't go together. I tried the old switch & cylinder, and I can't get them back together either.
What trick am I missing? Thanks in advance for your help.

Okay, the book says:

Insert the key in the cylinder and turn the key to the accessory position. Place the lock and key in the ignition switch, depress the pin slightly and turn the key counterclockwise. Push the lock cylinder into the switch. Turn the key to check the lock cylinder operation.

If the lock cylinder is not properly indexed to the 'remove and install' position, it'll take a really large hammer to get it in.

I assume that is all the way to the left, past accessory?
I'm in Indianapolis for the Indy drag races now, but will try to put the Mustang back together when I get home Tuesday.

Well, that's where you put it in. But the cylinder itself has to be indexed. There's a tiny detent ball on the back of the stainless face, and one click past the paperclip hole is the detent you need.

Thanks guys..... I was missing the boat on the positioning of the lock cylinder. I tried it when I got around this morning & had it together in 15 seconds.
