I have a 66 GT that has an AOD and putting in a new 302. I am going to get the exhaust done by a shop in town and they charge MUCH less if i can get the muffler my self, so i was going to do dual magnaflows 2.5" but i want to know first what header, that is reasonable, to use and what magnaflow 2.5 center inlet/outlet, off center inlet/center outlet, or what? and will 2.5 tips fit through the holes in the rear or will i have to go smaller?
Ben

PS: i know that alot people are in the boat w/ me about the not having a lot of money to waste so, keep that in mind
:(

years ago i ran a set of small tube off brand headers, i think i paid like $90 on sale from super shops, and 2 1/4" pipes out the back on a 289 because they were about $100 cheaper than 2 1/2" pipes. now i have a set of tri-y headers, they were about $110(these days about $150 for the same headers iirc). i think 2 1/2" tips will fit the GT openings, but i am not sure.

I thought anything bigger than 2 1/4" was an issue going by the driver side spring and the tank. IIRC it has been done, but the tank had to be "massaged".

I've been thinking of going bigger than my 2" duals.

FYI- MagnaFlow builds a 3" kit for 65/66 Mustangs and I have seen it installed and the 3" pipe gets through there with out any modification to the tank- so anything less should not be a problem-

The 3" is a pretty tight fit, but it does fit- this was installed on a lowered car as well- stock gas tank- stock rear suspension with lowering blocks

When I did my AOD, I stayed with the manifolds, but had to have custom front pipes made due to the wider body of the AOD. Do your headers take that into account?

If your motor is fairly stock, 2" dia will be fine.

I have 2 1/4 near the gas tank and 2 3/4 out the valance. I was thinking about going bigger on my exhaust, but would like to see how something bigger than 2 1/2 looks near the gas tank. Do you have any pics?
