66 fuel pump confusion

I'm 8 months into owning a beautiful 1966 coup with (what I was told at time of buying) the original 200 ci straight six engine. unbelievably, it's given me zero problems. I had a minor leak coming from my fuel pump, and a local mechanic suggested popping a new one on. called CJ parts (in PA) and they shipped me the only one for that engine.

It arrived and it is different than the one on my stang. Mine has a top fuel discharge, and the input comes from the side. The one they sent—and the one confirmed by countless part shops perfect for my alleged 200 ci—is the one sent, which has discharge and input coming from the bottom.

I'm stumped. and wasn't thinking a simple fuel pump was going to be the stumper on this relatively simple engine (I'm coming off a 16 yr run with a 74 bronco 302...)

any ideas? other than running/bending new steel tubing to fit the new pump?

much obliged.

If you could post a photo of the two, it would help, but it sounds like the pump on your car might be the 1965 version and the replacement pump you received is the correct 1966 version. Compare the photos below to get an idea.

Don't get too hung up on what it looks like. As long as it bolts to the block and the cam actuates the pump properly you will be fine. You can just finagle the lines into where they should be on the new pump.

Hi 66,
The pic on the left that "Real" provides is the style I had originally on my 65 w/I6 200 cu in. I agree with Rusty too. I later switched to the style the right hand pic shows. Can't remember why, it was so long ago, maybe it was just harder to get the original style back then.

Check the rubber hoses to the "IN' and "OUT" lines. If you replace them make sure you get the correct size rubber tubing approved for gasoline/fuel. While your at it, go to a marine shop and purchase some stainless steel clamps. They SHOULD have the ones that DO NOT dig into the rubber, but check and/or ask first. If I may ask which Island are you from?

I just checked the Ford parts book and it lists 2 seperate pumps used on the 1966 200 engine in the Mustang. One is identied by a stamping of 0290 on the mounting flange and the other was sourced from Carter and has 4092 stamped on its mounting flange, so that may have been the original pump.
