I am trying to wire the gauges for a 66 Mustang. I bought a Painless wiring harness, but the only advise I could get from Painess was to find an installer.
Here is the problem. The 66 Gauges have two prongs the Painless kit calls for three wires to be hooked up.
Red/White is the B+ power.
Black is ground
Colored to sensors.

1. Which wires do I hook up to the two prongs?
- Red/White and Colored
- Colored and Black
- Black and Red White.

2. What do I do with the left over wire (ground or Red/White)?

3. How do I hook up the constant voltage regulator?

the power wire gets hooked up to the cvr, and the output from the cvr gets hooked to the gauges.

you then need to run a wire from each gauge to the sending unit. use a factory wiring diagram to tell you which side of the gauge you hook each wire to. you can use the ground wire to ground the instrument panel, but the gauges ground through the sending units, so no extra ground is needed for them. the instrument panel lights however need a ground.

the reason painless suggested going to an installer is because the harness is likely designed to use aftermarket gauges, rather than the factory ones.

Thanks for your help. I beleive I am getting a grasp on this. Good thing you responded. Painless rep had me hooking up each Red/White to each gauge, then splicing ground together.

If I understand correctly, the power being the Red/White wires(corresponding to the Black/Green on the 1966 Mustang Instrument Panel diagram); I would hook up one Red/White wire to the CVR, then route from the right side to the oil and fuel gauges. From the 1966 wiring diagram it apears as if the ammeter and water temperature are getting power directly from the power feed. However, I am assuming that the Black/Green splices in the back of the wiring harness having been routed from the CVR. If this is true then as you say, rig the power from one Red/White to CVR then to each of the gauges.

Not sure about instrument panel lights yet. Painless has one brown wire for each
gauge that I think is supposed to be hooked up to the panel lights, which are one wire?
