66 Ignition cylinder question

My old ignition cylinder was worn out, it took quite some time, but I got it out. When it came out , it came out in pieces. I then purchased a new Scott Drake ignition cylinder with a new key. I installed it and it went in ok, but now the spring return will notwork properly. I tried to remove it again by turning the key to the accs. position and inserting a paper clip in the hole and slightly turning it counterclockwise. It will not come out!! I tried several times. Am I doing something wrong? Also any ideas why the new switch doesn't work properly?

Pick up this months "Mustang and Fords" magazine. They have a good article on that very topic with lots of pictures.

I purchased the magazine, the article was ok, but it didn't explain what to do if the cylinder wouldnt come out? Anyone have any other ideas? I cannot get it out?

If it's jammed you may not get it out. I have had a couple that went in really tight and had to file them a bit before it wold go all the way in smooth. Can you turn the cyl with the key at all? Or is it jammed tight? If you can't work it loose, you may have to get another switch and cylinder. If there was no spring return from the start position, I would suspect the switch was faulty. Also, if it "came out in pieces" then I would suspect that the guts of the switch fell out? Or do the parts that fell out look like nothing more than what the new lock cylinder looked like? THere are a lot of things it could be. Maybe some pictures would help?

I can turn the key. It is not jambed. But it will turn all the way around and does not have the spring return like its suppose to?

I think the switch is broken inside. It will be easier to deal with if it's out of the car. Not sure if you have it out or working with it in the car. Also, if it spins all the way around, then the little release pin must be sheared off. Sounds like new switch time.

The switch is in the car and will not come out. It is a brand new switch?

Wow. THe bezel will not come off till the lock cylinder comes out. You may have to drill it out. THe cylinder spins the whole way around with the key in it...and it won't slide out positioned back from the ACC position...not sure what to tell you from there. It sounds like the end of the cylinder snapped off, or the switch is brok inside, but I don't know why it would not slide out if it spins around to the correct position. Unless...the switch broke around the tab on the cylinder and is now permenently "captured". Unless someone else has an idea, I would drill it and replace both. Does it even feel like it moves out even a little bit in any position? If it starts to move out even a little, I would try to put some pressure on it if possible. VIse grips on the key or a couple screwdrivers against the bezel on the key. Just watch the dash. THat's all I can think of.

I got it out! I used the vise grips on the key trick. The new key cylinder was broke again when I pulled it out. Then I took the rear of switch assm. out and found that it has wear and was broken also. I am going to have to replace the whole thing. Thanks for your help.
